ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Established under the Act of the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir and functioning since August 2004, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is a State University recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f). The Engineering and Architecture programmes being offered by the University are approved by AICTE (except B. Tech. Industrial Biotechnology programme for which approval process has been initiated) and Council of Architecture respectively. It is a highly technical and fully residential University on the pattern of the Indian Institutes of Technology. The University is fully funded by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board with H.E., Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S. K. Sinha, the Governor of J&K being the Chancellor of the University and Professor N. K. Bansal, former senior professor at IIT Delhi being the Vice Chancellor. SMVD University is located at about 40 km north of Jammu and 12 km south of the holy town of Katra . H.E., Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the Hon’ble President of India inaugurated the University on August 19, 2004 and the first ever class of the University was engaged by the President.
Teaching and examination system at SMVDU is based on the tried pattern of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The University offers undergraduate (B. Tech.) programmes in Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology & B. Architecture, and postgraduate programmes in Business Administration (M.B.A.), Business Administration in Business Economics (M. B. E.), M. Sc. (Mathematics), M. Tech. Energy Management (Part time), M. Tech. (Manufacturing & Automation) & M.A. (Philosophy). The University also offers Ph.D. programme in various disciplines. High speed internet connectivity is in place to facilitate academic course work, research activities and administrative services. State of the art learning resources and laboratory facilities are being provided to support teaching and research programmes. The University has large collection of books with online access to over 3000 research journals through INDEST.

The campus extends in an area of 400 acres of picturesque landscape, presenting a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. The main axis of the entire site, points due north towards the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Academic blocks are centrally located, with the administration and library blocks adjoining it. The lake which is coming up in the gorge on the site is located to reflect the image of the shrine from various points. The residential accommodation provided to the faculty is located within a reasonable distance from the academic complex. The University guest house presents a splendid view and the University hillock in the background adds to its beauty
The appreciation of both Indian wisdom and the necessity of a balanced education combining the best of the philosophic and scientific traditions is necessary for the holistic development of the students, enabling them to spend their formative years of learning fruitfully to combine science and technology with spirituality and humanity. The atmosphere and the activities on the campus are oriented to provide intellectual as well as creative environment. There is ample scope for the promotion of interaction among the students to enable them to be empowered, enlightened and to become responsible citizens. The student life on campus is such as to help students to be able to analyze and understand the consequence of their own actions. This is expected to allow them to stand up to the many pressures of life and realize their full potential.
The campus witnesses a pleasant climate for most of the time in a year. The average temperatures recorded during summer and winter are 35°C and 18°C respectively, with a maximum and a minimum recorded at 40°C and 5°C respectively.

Fee Refund Rules
Cancellation of admission shall be governed by the following rules and guidelines:
a) In case a student opts for withdrawal of admission before commencement of the class work full tuition fee shall be refundable
b) In case a student opts for withdrawal of admission within 15 days of commencement of the class work 75% of the tuition fee shall be refundable
c) In case a student opts for withdrawal of admission after 15 days but within 30 days of commencement of the class work 50% of the tuition fee shall be refundable
d) In case a student opts for withdrawal of admission beyond 30 days of commencement of the class work tuition fee shall be nonrefundable.
e) No refund (except the security deposit) can be claimed incase of the withdrawal of admission after 3 months from date of admission of the student

  • Full security deposit shall be refundable irrespective of time of withdrawal.

  • Fee under the heads 4 to 10 as given in Fee Structure in Table I shall be refundable partially or fully depending upon the duration of stay (not more than 3 months from the date of admission) on the campus which shall be determined on case to case basis as per the rules of the University.

  •  Fee under head 3 (counseling charges Rs. 5,000/-) shall be non refundable.

  • University shall release the amount of refund within a maximum period of three months from the date a student applies for the same.

  •  Refund shall not be treated as a matter of right however the same shall be done only after a student applies for the same on a prescribed format

Hostel Accommodation
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University being a fully residential University has excellent hostel facilities for its prospective students. There are 3 boys’ and one girls hostel in place and the number is expected to go up by 2008 with the increasing number of students. The hostels for the students have been designed to provide sufficient interaction among the students, yet with the maximum possibility of personal space. The hostels are located at walking distance to any College. The rooms in the hostels are spacious and well-ventilated. The hostels have a centralized mess facility. Each hostel is being provided with WiFi zone for dedicated access to internet.
Placement
Two batches of M.B.A. have graduated from the University so far and we have been able to achieve 100% placement in leading corporate houses and MNC’s. The University has recently established Corporate Relations & Scientific Research Division (CR&SRD) for the purpose, headed by a fulltime placement officer.
