Established
under the Act of the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir
and functioning since August 2004, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
University is a State University recognized by University Grants
Commission (UGC) under section 2(f). The Engineering and
Architecture programmes being offered by the University are
approved by AICTE (except B. Tech. Industrial Biotechnology
programme for which approval process has been initiated) and
Council of Architecture respectively. It is a highly technical
and fully residential University on the pattern of the Indian
Institutes of Technology. The University is fully funded by Shri
Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board with H.E., Lt. Gen. (Retd.) S. K.
Sinha, the Governor of J&K being the Chancellor of the
University and Professor N. K. Bansal, former senior professor
at IIT Delhi being the Vice Chancellor. SMVD University is
located at about 40 km north of Jammu and 12 km south of the
holy town of Katra . H.E., Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the Hon’ble
President of India inaugurated the University on August 19, 2004
and the first ever class of the University was
engaged by the President.
Teaching and examination system at SMVDU is based on the tried
pattern of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The
University offers undergraduate (B. Tech.) programmes in
Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology &
B. Architecture, and postgraduate programmes in Business
Administration (M.B.A.), Business Administration in Business
Economics (M. B. E.), M. Sc. (Mathematics), M. Tech. Energy
Management (Part time), M. Tech. (Manufacturing & Automation) &
M.A. (Philosophy). The University also offers Ph.D. programme in
various disciplines. High speed internet connectivity is in
place to facilitate academic course work, research activities
and administrative services. State of the art learning resources
and laboratory facilities are being provided to support teaching
and research programmes. The University has large collection of
books with online access to over 3000 research journals through
INDEST.
The
campus extends in an area of 400 acres of picturesque landscape,
presenting a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural
beauty. The main axis of the entire site, points due north
towards the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. Academic blocks are
centrally located, with the administration and library blocks
adjoining it. The lake which is coming up in the gorge on the
site is located to reflect the image of the shrine from various
points. The residential accommodation provided to the faculty is
located within a reasonable distance from the academic complex.

The appreciation of both Indian wisdom and the necessity of a
balanced education combining the best of the philosophic and
scientific traditions is necessary for the holistic development
of the students, enabling them to spend their formative years of
learning fruitfully to combine science and technology with
spirituality and humanity. The atmosphere and the activities on
the campus are oriented to provide intellectual as well as
creative environment. There is ample scope for the promotion of
interaction among the students to enable them to be empowered,
enlightened and to become responsible citizens. The student life
on campus is such as to help students to be able to analyze and
understand the consequence of their own actions. This is
expected to allow them to stand up to the many pressures of life
and realize their full potential.
The campus witnesses a pleasant climate for most of the time in
a year. The average temperatures recorded during summer and
winter are 35°C and 18°C respectively, with a maximum and a
minimum recorded at 40°C and 5°C respectively. |
