Katra 13 Nov: International Conference on Mitochondria Research and Medicine (ICMRM-2010) concluded here today. 150 delegates apart from the 10 invited speakers from India, USA and Austria participated in the Conference. The concluding session was chaired by Vice Chancellor, Prof. R.N K Bamezai in the Matrika Auditorium in the university campus of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. Mr. M. K Dwivedi, Secterary to Govt., Science and Technology Department was the Guest of Honour on this occasion. Prof. Bamezai in his address expressed his satisfaction over the successful conduct of first evener International Conference organized by SMVD University. He said that ICMRM-2010 has provided an excellent platform to the young and budding scientists to pursue their ideas in the area of Mitochondria with renewed commitment and enthusiasm. He said that I consider myself blessed to be the head of SMVD University and exhorted the faculty and students of various institutions to peruse intergraded approach to innovative research which to lead to social development.

Mr. Dwivedi, congratulated the Vice Chancellor and Organizing Secretary of the conference for taking initiative to organize ICMRM-2010 in our state. On this occasion he asked the scientific community of the state to expose the young students of the state to eminent scientists from all over the world in the frontier areas of S&T. He said that poling of resources from National and International Institutions coupled with our own resources for strengthening our S&T base is the need of the hour. On this occasion he recollected his long association with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and said that SMVD University is one of most successful projects established by the Board and what we see today on the ground is as was envisioned by the Board when the idea was conceived.

The co-chair of the conference Prof. Keshav Singh from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, USA said that there are many challenges that young students have to face, but it is important to continue to pursue the innovative ideas. He said that when he started working in the area of Mitochondria there was hardly any activity in this area world over, however ever since then critical mass in this area has gone up and the momentum needs to be maintained.

On this occasion best paper and poster awards were given away jointly by Prof. Bamezai, Mr. Dwivedi and Dr. Singh. The best paper award in oral category went to Ms Gousia, IIIM, Jammu, second prize went to Ms. Shelly, Jammu University and the third prize went to Ms. Nahid, from CCMB, Hyderabad. The best poster award went to Ms Arpita, IIIM Jammu, Second prize went to Mr. Govindraj, CCMB, Hyderabad and the the third prize went to Ms. Irum, IIIM Jammu.

Dr. S. Vaishnavi, Organizing Secretary of the conference in her address thanked Department of Biotechnology (DBT), GOI, Department of Science and Technology (DST), GOI, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), GOI, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), GOI, J & K State Council for Science & Technology, J&K Govt. & Sea Horse Biosciences, USA for supporting the conference.

As part of the conference a special Conference Workshop by Prof. Erich Gnaiger, Innsbruck Medical University, Austria on "Problems and Solutions in Mitochondrial Respiratory Physiology” was held in the evening which was attended by all the young participants and students of the University.

Dear Colleagues,

It is my privilege to welcome you to ICMRM - 2010. Conferences such as these are essential to update ourselves and share our experiences.
The scientific program will feature many topics from role of mitochondria in cancer to apoptosis, from mitochondrial physiology to mitochondrial disorder case studies etc. To present this program, we have invited experts from our country. In addition, we are fortunate to count on the participation of international experts who have traveled great distances to share their knowledge and experience. These contributions are what will make ICMRM 2010 an academic feast for all the participants.

Participants from all over India have been invited to submit abstracts, and the response has been very encouraging. The submissions were reviewed, and 31 abstracts have been accepted. The participants will present their work during the conference in an Oral/Poster format. Over the scheduled two days, we will listen to experts on the latest advances and updates in mitochondrial research. It is an excellent opportunity to continue advancing our knowledge, share innovations, learn about recent developments and strengthen the network of researchers in this field. This conference hopes to further the field of mitochondrial research that has been gaining momentum, more so in recent years in India.

In addition to that we are privileged to announce a special Conference Workshop by Prof. Erich Gnaiger, Innsbruck Medical University, Austria on "Problems and Solutions in Mitochondrial Respiratory Physiology" to be held on 13/11/2010.

We hope that you will always remember ICMRM-2010 as an excellent forum with good memories, and return home with renewed enthusiasm for your profession.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, many thanks to all, and welcome to SMVDU for ICMRM-2010.

We are grateful to Department of Biotechnology (DBT), GOI, Department of Science and Technology (DST), GOI, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), GOI, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), GOI, J & K State Council for Science & Technology, J&K Govt. & Sea Horse Biosciences, USA for providing sponsorship for the Conference.
