Prof. (Dr.) Mukund V. Deshpande, Emeritus Scientist and Professor AcSIR, Biochemical Sciences Division, National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune who has been appointed as Adjunct Professor at Department of Biotechnology is presently visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra; between 23-30 April, 2017. Prof. Deshpande is a well-known Fungal Biotechnologist with a vast research experience and has to his credit 140 Research papers in National & International Journals, 9 Patents and has guided 20 Ph. D. students.
During his present visit to Department of Biotechnology (DoBT) at the University he shall be delivering 12 General/Special Lectures on various topics of “Fungal Biology”. In his Inaugural Session for the students of B. Tech. and M. Sc. (Biotechnology) he discussed the various facets of Fungal Realm in Biotechnology. He shall also be delivering lectures on topics such as: Biopolymers & Biosensors, Chitinolytic Enzymes: An Appraisal as a Product of Commercial Potential, Novel Groups of Fungi, Fungicides and Antifungals, Bioprospecting of entomo and myco pathogens, Can fungi compete with marine sources for chitosan production, Microbiology of Wine Fermentation, Recent trends in Microbiology & Fungal Dimorphism.
During his week-long visit he shall also have discussions related to research activities with various Research Groups/Faculty Members and Ph. D. students of DoBT. Prof. Deshpande during his interactions with the faculty members and students of various Departments of the University plans to discuss about various possibilities for collaborative research between Faculty members and Scientists at SMVDU and NCL, Pune; respectively. He will also discuss about different industries from Maharashtra which will give training 3-6 months to students which can generate Industry-Academia joint ventures and entrepreneurs which will come forward to use the Incubation Facility of SMVD University under the TBIC venture. The conduct of the lectures were coordinated by Prof. V. Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering & Head, DoBT and Dr. Sharada Potukuchi, Associate Prof., DoBT under the guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, SMVDU.
SMVDU Katra: 25 NSS Volunteers of SMVDU participated in the multi-stakeholders’ meet focusing on cleaning up 100 places in the country on the experiences from the 10 Swachh Iconic Places already identified, one of which is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. The meet held on 25th April at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Super-specialty Hospital at 11.00 am with auspicious presence of Governor Sh. N. N. Vohra, Minister PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister Drinking Water and Sanitation Sh. Narendra Singh Rathor, Secretary of the same ministry Sh. Parameswaran Iyer, MLA Sh. Ajay Nanda, CEO Shrine Board Sh. Ajeet Kumar Sahu and other dignitaries from other Iconic Places like Manikarnika Varanasi, Kamakhya Temple, Ajmer Sharif etc. The main objective of the meet was to review the working of the Iconic Places and to share the experiences for future betterment. Secretary Sh. Parameswaran Iyer presented a brief progress report on the same.
Minister Sh. Narendra Singh Rathor further announced the next 10 Iconic Places for the same objective which include Gangotri, Yamunotri, Charminar, Kaladi etc. to quote a few. Governor N. N. Vohra highlighted that we need to inculcate among people the habit of cleanliness and the crucial factor is to use suitable and latest technology for cleaning and waste management so as to make the Iconic Places example for inspiration. The students’ team from SMVDU was led by Dr. V. K. Tripathi, Nodal officer Swachh Bharat SMVDU and Mr. Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Coordinator NSS. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Saurabh, Asst. SMVDU, 14 April: A three day “International Conference on Theory of Architectural Design – Global Practices and Local Milieu’, organized by Department of Architecture and Landscape Design (DALD) Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University was inaugurated on April 14th, 2017 by Shri K. K. Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The session began with an introduction giving a brief about the proceedings. Ar. Anoop Kumar Sharma, Organizing Secretary and faculty DALD, delivered the introductory note and presented the agenda for the Conference. Ar. Aditya Kumar Singh, HOD, DALD welcomed the dignitaries. Chief Guest, Shri K. K. Sharma, Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain and Prof. V. Verma, Dean Faculty of Engineering addressed the gathering. The session was concluded by a vote of thanks by Ar. Navin Gupta, Joint Organizing Secretary ICTOAD. The proceeding of the conference was released by the dignitaries. There are more than 65 papers, plenary sessions, technical sessions, workshop for students are scheduled and there is representation from almost every State of India and also from abroad.
The Chief Guest, Shri K. K. Sharma focused on the need of safe roads/walkways in old cities of the country, landscaping along the roads and around the buildings for betterment with special attention to the safety of the children and the aged. He further stressed on the improvisation of the unauthorized colonies with minimum dismantling/demolishing of the existing structures with a proper provision of basic amenities. He expressed the need to address the housing problems in the urban area, migration from the rural and better traffic managements in the metro-cities. He also expressed his satisfaction and congratulated the SMVDU, its students, faculty and leadership upon getting ranked under 150 top universities of India by MHRD. He also said on the occasion that the university must look for educational collaborations, sustainable education and education that inculcate the sense of global citizenship. An industrial visit was organized for B.Tech. 3rd year students of Mechanical Engineering to the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, on 22ndApril, 2017. The visit was aimed at letting the students to get the insight of all the engineering principles and techniques, employed into the making of state-of- the-Art Indian Railway coaches. The visit was attended more than 38 students of Mechanical engineering under the supervision of Er. Yatheshth Anand and Er. Amit Sinha.
Mr. Shrikrishan Juneja toured the students through the different shops viz. the sheet metal shop, steel shop, painting shop, shell shop, wagon shop and the furnishing shop. During the visit, the students were benefitted by the demonstration of 22 axis Laser cutting and welding machine, plasma profile cutting machine, cut to length machine etc. and the other latest, state of the art robotic welding and painting techniques. However, B.Tech students exchanged the views with the technical experts of the Rail Coach Factory in which technical experts of the Rail Coach Factory informed the students that the coaches for the various countries like Bangladesh and Sri-Lanka are also manufactured in the same factory. It is pertinent to mention that with this visit SMVDU student get the latest knowledge and exposure in the field of mechanical engineering. Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof. Sanjeev Jain congratulated the students for the industrial visit and further appreciated the efforts of the organizing team for the Industrial visit.
SMVDU Katra: World famous international architects Vanessa Lungan Li, Shirish Beri, Yatin Pandya, and Kalhan Mattoo delivered their lectures after the Inaugural Ceremony of ICTOAD at Matrika Auditorium. It was a wonderful experience for participants, students of the university and guests alike to listen to these esteemed architects talking about their experiences in the field of architecture. The day ended on a high note with a cultural evening followed by Gala Dinner. This series was continued on day 2 by Workshops on Hill and Vernacular Architecture by renowned Architects Nilanjan Bhowal and Debashish Borah. Ar. Jeet Kumar Gupta commented insightfully upon the necessary care that an architect has to take in case of conceiving hill architecture, for example, the need to understand the energy consumption issues, use of materials, cost of the buildings and its maintenance cost and most importantly understating of the sight-climate and its particularity, to quote a few.
The workshops were succeeded by a Heritage tour of Amar Mahal, Hari Niwas Palace and Mubarak Mandi in collaboration with INTACH, Jammu. It was a great learning to the 120 participants who joined in for the heritage walk. The walk was not just important as a visit to the sights of tourism but also from the point of architecture how the history, the memory and legacy and its continuum connects to our today’s understanding of the city and its culture. SMVDU Katra: The meeting of the Board of Studies (BOS) of the Dept. of Energy Management, SMVDU, held on 24th April. Prof. Jyotirmay Mathur Dept. of Mechanical Engg. NIT Jaipur who was available through skype, Prof. S. K. Kaushik, Center for Energy Studies IIT Delhi, Prof. V. Verma Dean Faculty of Engg. SMVDU, Dr. Sanjeev Anand Head Dept. of Energy Management SMVDU and Dr. V. V. Tyagi were the distinguished members. The highlights of the meeting was inclusion of financial models and course on ‘Discourses on Human Virtue’ along with emphasis on regular seminars to keep up breast with the present day technology etc.
The BOS has the mandate, as so derived from the statutes of the university, to give all recommendations regarding academic programs, updating of the curriculum, reviewing of syllabi as per the need of the students and identifying the research areas for the department that may open the gateway for academia-industry collaboration. It is worth noting here that this is the only dept. is the State of J&K that offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. programs in Renewable Energy. The recommendations submitted by the BOS will be further deliberated in the Academic Council.
Prof. Abhinandan Jain, Adjunct Professor, SoB, SMVDU and Professor at IIM Ahmadabad conducted a week long workshop on ‘Case Writing and Case Method of Teaching’ for the faculty members and research students of the School of Business, Faculty of Management.
Having specialization in the field of product promotion and distribution management, strategic marketing and quantitative models in marketing, Prof. Jain has taught at IPMI, Jakarta, Indonesia; and Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal besides, IIM Ahmedabad. He has written more than 60 cases in the different areas of management education alongwith number of research papers.
Prof. Jain emphasized on imparting skills to the students of MBA as only disseminating knowledge is not adequate in present era of digital world for the students of management programme. Prof. Jain arranged deep analytical sessions for the participants with the aid of three comprehensive Case studies written by him and other authors. During his sessions the conference hall of SoB became mini IIM.
Moreover, sessions of Prof. Jain with the students of MBA 1st year as well as MBA 2nd year have become really fruitful by the resource person with the crisp and effective teaching pedagogy. Furthermore, visit of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor SMVDU to the School of Business during the one of the sessions of the workshop gave positive inputs to the participants and wished success for the participants of the workshop. The Vice-Chancellor called for using case method of teaching for more effective teaching delivery in the classroom so that better product can be prepared for the corporate world.
SMVD University successfully organized SARANG - Annual Sports Fest. The Sports Fest includes inter-house tournaments for different games like Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table-Tennis, Lawn-Tennis, Kabaddi etc. On the day of its completion, various Athletics events were held on 20th April at Multipurpose Sports Ground of University. Ankita Tiwary has secured 1st position (14.6 s) and Muskan has secured 2nd position (15.1 s) in 100m (Women) event, while Hanuman Gurjar has secured 1st position (12.2 s) and Sachin Kapil has secured 2nd position(12.4 s) in 100m (Men) event. Also Prasad Birajdar has secured 1st position (26.1 s) and Shubam Sharma has secured 2nd position (26.7 s) in 200m (M). The winner of 400m (M) is Shubam Sharma (54.2 s) with Hanuman Gurjar (54.9 s) as Runner up.
The events were headed by Board for Sports Activities (BSA) President, Mr. Rajiv Kumar and guided under the leadership of Sucha Singh, Sports Coach. All the events were managed by Student Sports Secretary Jayant Kumar and other coordinators. Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain congratulated all the winners as well as the organizing team.
SMVDU Katra: A Ten-Day Advanced Theatre Workshop which was focused on individual development of students concluded here at SMVD University organized by the Board of Cultural Activities. 30 students participated in the workshop. The focus of the workshop was to develop among participating students the ability to display their talents by enactment. The core areas of instruction were awareness, voice, body movements, interior and exterior life of an actor, emotions (rasa) and script analysis. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Vikram Sharma, an alumnus of world renowned Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute New York. He has also worked with internationally renowned names in the field of acting like Paul Calderon, Tom Bangle, Lorca Peress, Susan Grace Cohen just to name a few. He has also worked in many off Broadway productions and commercials in NYC.
Before moving to NYC, Vikram has actively worked with renowned theatre director Padmashree Balwant Thakur for many years. He just finished shooting for a short film titled "An invitation" Co-starring Rajat Kapoor and is also working on a feature film directed by critically acclaimed Marathi director Ruturaj Dhalgade. He is also guest faculty at National School of Drama, New Delhi works regularly with students there and teaches specialized acting classes. The workshop was assisted by Mr. Gaurav Jamwal who is a known theatre artist and has performed in numerous national and international theatre festivals. Dr. V. K. Tripathi President BCA felicitates the instructor and Dr. Yugal Khajuria Dean of Students congratulated all the participants.
One day industrial visit has been organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU for imparting technical exposure to students of 1st and 2nd year, M.Tech (Manufacturing and Automation) under supervision of team of faculty members headed by Dr. Balbir Singh, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU. In Dabur group, Bari Brahmana Jammu, students experienced the automation of plant and the live functioning of various stages in the processing of products such as Hajmola, Odomos, FEM skin cream, Odonil, Gulabari etc. Pure mechanical working in fabrication of wire mesh, crate wire are observed by students to get practical exposure of wire drawing, bending, wire knitting etc. in Shuvam industries, Industrial Estate, Digiana, Jammu. M.Tech also exchanged views with the technical team of the Dabur Group. It is pertinent to mention that Technical team/expert of the Dabur Group briefing about the mechanical process for the production of the products to the University Students. However, M.Tech students expressed the strong desire for arranging similar kind of visit to the other industries as well. Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, Prof Sanjeev jain assured the student for arranging the industrial visit with in the State and outside the State so that Student could get best exposure to the Automation field.
SMVDU participated in the week long 1st State Universities Sports Championships held from April 3, 2017 to April 8, 2017organized by the University of Jammu.
Teams from all the Universities of the Jammu & Kashmir State participated in the event. The Championships was held in various events like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Table-Tennis. SMVDU participated in all the six events.
A total number of 96 students participated from SMVDU in various events. The team was accompanied by Mr. Rajiv Kumar (Faculty I/c Sports), Mr. Sameer Vohra (Asstt. Registrar, Student Affairs) and Mr. Sucha Singh (Sports Coach). In total SMVDU clinched 6 positions in various sports. In Table Tennis SMVDU got 2ndfor both Men and Women. In Basketball Women SMVDU Katra claimed 2nd position and in Men Basketball got 3rd place. In Badminton SMVDU got 3rd place in both Men and Women categories.
Vice Chancellor SMVDU Prof. Sanjeev Jain congratulated the winners for their performance and also appreciated their endeavors by announcing cash prize for all winning teams.
SMVDU Katra: The Quality Circle (QC) of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of SMVDU was chaired by the Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain to discuss issues and take necessary steps with an objective of continuous improvement in performance by all departments vis-à-vis the benchmarks set by the university. In order to ensure free, transparent and meaningful engagement of all stakeholders of the university, the Quality Circle was established recently. The main highlights of the meeting were the deliberation upon the university and departmental Vision and Mission along with the Quality Policy, the role of Quality Circle towards periodic sensitization of members through different programs, publicity of the success stories, separate webpage for the Quality Circle, implementation mechanism of ‘problem-cum-suggestion bank’ with an e-version of the same, review of quality circles at each departmental level, rewards in form of letters of appreciation, identification of three best QC Sections/Departments, to quote a few. Among the notable code of conducts of the QC are the work style in a cooperative manner, encouragement of new ideas and practices, maintenance of friendly attitude, strive for enthusiasm, and due acknowledgement of each one’s efforts.
Dean of Students, Dr. Yugal Khajuria raised the issue of obtaining consent from parents before sending the students for any outside event,(i.e) conference/excursion/Seminar/Symposium and also earmarking of a ‘Summer Hostel’ for the students staying back on campus during summers for courses or projects. The same was duly acknowledged by Committee Members. The meeting was attended by Prof. V.K. Bhat, Registrar, Prof. V. Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. D. SMVDU Katra: Professor Sunil Pandey from Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi, conducted lecture series on Welding Technologies from 06 Apr-09 Apr, 2017 in department of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU. Various important aspects on Welding process such as hazards and safety, welding consumables, power sources; metal transfer, latest welding technology developed etc. are covered in interactive session with students of B.Tech. and M.Tech. (Manufacturing and Automation) in the Department. Further, students are given exposures in research avenues, job opportunities and startup scope in the welding field. Dr. Balbir Singh, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering presented vote of thanks acknowledging the conduct of special lecture series and faculty interaction for updating syllabus of B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering and M.Tech. Manufacturing and Automation, so as to meet industry needs and improve employability of students. The session was followed by extensive interaction.
Prof. Kamta Prasad, Former President, Indian Economic Association, Chairman Institute for Resource Management and Economic Development, Delhi, Adjunct Professor of Department of Economic delivered special lectures for the students of Department of Economics during his visit during 17th-18th April, 2017. His topic of discussion was Public Investment Criterion and Government’s Objective of SABKA VIKAS. The lectures primarily revolved around the most burning concept of present Modi Government- “ Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” i.e. Development of All. Prof Prasad, contradicted the traditional concept-“Greatest good of the greatest number”. The objective is good but needs to be operationalized, otherwise, it would remain merely an empty slogan, the speaker added.
In the interactive scission, he came up with explanation of how “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas” not only influenced the masses but also the government in power and explained the key economic concepts like Benefit cost Ratio, Internal Rate of Return and their major role in Public Sector Projects which act as instruments to “ Sabka Sath, Sabka vikas”. He not only thrown light on this new concept along with its working but also highlighted the Limitations of the pre-existing models and finally he suggested certain policy measures that could further aid in development of Indian Economy with respect to “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas”.
SMVDU Katra: Director of National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmadabad Dr. Pradyumna Vyas visited Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University on 7th April and addressed all the faculty members of the University. In his address he highlighted the various challenges being faced by people from hilly areas. Our country has about 11 hilly states having certain common problems which are different from plain area. Garbage disposal system is another challenge in the hilly areas. There is a lot of scope for mechanical and architecture experts to work on challenges being faced in hilly areas. Present era is the era of 4th industrial revolution marked by digitization of everyone process. In this era, geographical boundaries are to be merged and technology cannot be developed in isolation. Now various experts are working together to produce saleable product. He has also offered to students of SMVDU to work on local problems in collaboration with NID. Lastly he gave mantra for success in three words, i.e., positive attitude, sincere effort and integrity. He has appreciated SMVDU for opening of TBIC for students, entrepreneur to convert their ideas to realization level and finally to commercial level.
Dr. Vyas is a noted academician and technocrat and expert in Industrial Design. He is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and University for the Creative Arts Franham UK and has vast service experience at Kikenny Design Center, Republic of Ireland. He has also served as Member Secretary of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India. The address was attended by faculty members of the University from various departments. The session was followed by extensive interaction. Dr. Sumeet Gupta, Dean Academic Affairs extended a welcome to him. The Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjeev Jain presided over the session and felicitated the speaker in the end. Registrar Prof. V. K. Bhat was also present on the occasion.
Thirsty-six students of Biotechnology, SMVD University, Katra of M. Sc. (Sem II) and B. Tech. (Sem VI) accompanied by Dr. Sharada Potukuchi, Associate Prof.; Dr. Ratna Chandra, Assistant Prof.; Dr, Vinod Singh, Assistant Prof. and associated Lab Staff member Ms. Meenakshi Krishen visited various facilities at Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu on 17th April 2017. The students got a chance to visit and interact with expert scientists and research scholars in different disciplines where they were demonstrated various experiments in the areas of Plant Biotechnology, Cancer Pharmacology, Value Addition, QCQA and Instrumentation (including the NMR, HPLC) sections. They were introduced to the modern methods of conserving rare germplasm in the Plant Tissue Culture Repository and their preservation in the Herbarium in seed/plant parts/specimen forms. They also had the opportunity to see the various types of experimental mice on which high end experiments related drug testing were in progress in the Animal House. Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu is a world class Institute in the area of Natural Products with expertise in all the relevant fields needed for drug development especially Herbal drugs based on traditional systems of healthcare and validated as per modern systems.
