NEW COURSES
The School of Business is going to offer MBA (Financial
Management and Control) programme by the next academic session.
This course has been designed as a full time two-year programme
focusing on the proficiency in Financial Management and Control.
The regular teaching is to be supplemented by intensive
computer-based laboratory work on Software Packages, Research,
Practical Training and Field Work. A continuation of
technical skills, value orientation and in-depth understanding
of issues will be tried out to generate wide range of choices
resulting in alternative employment opportunities at the
completion of programme.

He introduced the students
to the basic concepts of market research and relevance
of decision making in current business scenario. He also
deliberated upon the basic process of market research
along with illustrations. He shared his understanding of
research methodology with the students explaining
different sampling techniques used in research. The use
of operations research techniques in decision making was
discussed in the concluding session of the lecture. |

Mr. Nirmal Kumar Bhardwaj visits College of
Management

Whole world is one level field, said Mr. Nirmal Kumar
Bhardwaj while interacting with the Business students at
College of Management, SMVD University.
A prodigy of IIT Kharagpur, Mr. Nirmal has worked in
various organizations in the corporate world in India
and abroad. Sharing his views on modern era he said that
it is no longer an era where information was power.
Through technology, information is available right at
finger tips. He urged the students to apply what they
learn. He said that knowledge is not a function of
ability to write exams and score marks. It is the
ability to understand, assimilate and apply. It is the
ability to use hybrid knowledge. He also discussed
Emergence of Management as a profession and major
accelerators of growth of Indian Economy. He also shared
his views on key characteristics of a manager. He asked
the students to be fearless, the only key to creativity
and learning. |

Corporate is looking for person-organization fit, said
Mr. Atul Gopal while interacting with the students of
College of Management. Mr. Atul Gopal who is an alumnus
of IIM-Kolkata is also a guest member of premier
institutes of management in India like Symbiosis, IIM,
and IMDR etc. On being asked about the mantra of
achieving success, he said that capitalizing on one’s
strengths and identifying the weaknesses to make sure
that they do not hamper the growth of the person is the
way to achieve success in life. He suggested the
students to choose the career of their interest
involving such activities which give happiness from
within. He shared his experiences of recruitment and
gave the students an insight into what the industry is
looking for in fresh graduates. He asked the students to
take their own decisions and be proactive. Corporate
now-a-days is looking for a fit between the person and
the culture of the organization. He substantiated his
argument with examples from Google, HCL, HLL etc. The
question and answer session ended with reflections on
the session by Prof. N.D. Mathur, Dean, College of

Guest Lecture on "Emerging
Importance of Strategic Change and Flexibility -
Managing Continuity and Change” by Prof. Sushil Kumar,

Prof. Sushil Kumar from Department of Management,
IIT Delhi delivered a lecture on “The Emerging
Importance of Strategic Change and Flexibility-Managing
Continuity and Change” at College of Management.
He discussed strategic management and paradox of
flexibility which is either exploration or exploitation.
He insisted that quickness in responding to change in
customer’s behaviour is essential to survive in today’s
dynamic business scenario. He suggested one to change
when one is at the peak of the performance and has to
define a new performance curve.
The lecture was illustrated by citing many classic
examples that included cannibalization of Microsoft,
core competencies of Sony, Honda, Motorola, and
technologies of Intel, Xerox, Ford, GM, and reviving
strategy of IBM etc. The lecture was concluded with an
emphasis on the pragmatic application of Blue Ocean
Strategy which emphasizes on making the competition
irrelevant if one wants to grow. He said that the big
globalization strategy today is “Go and Grow with your
customers”. The organizations should act like a flowing
stream that is continuing and changing. |

Two day National Seminar on “Emergence of Service
Sector Led Growth: Myth or Reality” concludes at Shri
Mata Vaishno Devi University.

Governor Lt. Gen(Retd) S. K. Sinha called for
compatibility between service sector and industrial
sector to sustain economic development of the country.
Inaugurating the Seminar the Governor said that
the service sector has immensely contributed to the
growth of the economy. The governor stressed the need
for extending the benefits of service sector to hitherto
uncovered 367 million populations in the country. “if we
do so then only the growth of development can sustain.
He noted with satisfaction that India is fast reaching a
level of development nation ands is poised to be a
global economic power.
Tracing the growth of development to the sustained
efforts made in various sectors immediately after
independence, General Sinha said the initial years
witnessed a controversy over prioritization of
agriculture and industrial sectors. The Governor said
the conception of management has been pioneered by the
army which had to manage large manpower and huge
equipments. Gradually, requirement of management were
felt in the civil society and the concept grew with
refinements with changing times. General Sinha, who is
also the chancellor of the University, elaborately dwelt
on the need for utilizing resources and assets in a
productive manner and cited the example of Britain that
took lead over Spain in economic development. In his
presidential address, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. N.K. Bansal
said that emergence of service sector growth in India is
a reality indices of the Indian economy. He said that
this sector contributes more than 50% to the Indian GDO.
Prof. Rajat. K. Baisya, Department of Management
Studies, IIT Delhi in his keynote address focused on
importance of service sector, outsourcing, tourism and
the ground reality. Earlier the governor also
released the second issue of Arth Anvesan, the Journal
of College of Management. Additional Chief Executive
Officer, SMVDSB, Puneet Kumar, Deputy Commissioner,
Udhampur, O P Kalandhria and senior executives of
various multinational companies besides intellectuals
and luminaries in the management field from various
parts of the country were present at the inaugural
session.
The Seminar continued with Technical Session-I being on
Knowledge Management. It was chaired by Prof. R.D.
Sharma, Rector Kathua Campus, University of Jammu, Prof.
Prakash Singh from IIM Lucknow was the guest of honour
and Sh. S.K. Jain, GM-HR, ONGC delivered keynote address
in the session. High quality research papers were
presented by delegates from different corners of the
Country on themes like Knowledge Process Outsourcing,
Knowledge Management, Knowledge markets, Value added
accounting etc.Technical Session-II was on the theme
Telecommunication Service. It was chaired by Mr. Punit
Mathur, GM-Airtel and Ms. Vineeta Dixit, Senior
Consultant; Ministry of Information Technology was the
co-chairperson of the session. Various burning topics on
telecommunication sector were discussed by delegates
like e-governance, telecommunications and rural
development, internet and socio-economic development
etc. Technical Session-III being on HR Outsourcing
discussed the issues and challenges in the Business
Process Outsourcing Sector. The chairperson of the
session was Prof. T.N. Mathur from University of
Rajasthan, co-chairperson being Vikrant Makhija,
Head-HR, Airtel, Jammu.
In his Valedictory address, Prof. N.K. Bansal, the
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, SMVD University, said that
technology alone will not suffice. India requires
transformational change in the education sector to meet
the needs of the Industry. The young brains need to be
trained by the experienced to make them employable and
that requires collaboration of industry and academics.
Education needs to be relevant to the needs of the
industry. In the function, the guest of honour Shri S.K.
Jain, GM-HR, ONGC also shared his thoughts on the
Seminar. The function was presided over by Prof. Aijaz
Mattoo, Head-Department of Management, University of
Kashmir. The function came to an end with warm
reflections by the delegates about the Seminar. |

"Investment in Stock Market" by Prof.
Khursheed Bhatt Head-Department of Commerce, University
of Kashmir

While talking about the Management of Investment, Prof.
Khursheed Bhatt stressed on setting of objective of
investment by identifying the risk tolerance limit
determined by the financial capability and nervousness
of a person. He said that setting of objective should
then be followed by a decision on portfolio of
investments. He suggested putting a portion of wealth in
risky assets and a portion in non-risky assets so as to
assure a good return. Fundamental analysis is required
to identify the stocks, which consists of Economy
analysis, Industry analysis and finally Company
analysis. He also discussed the feasibility of choosing
the direct and indirect routes of investment.

The College of Management reunion was celebrated
homecoming weekend amidst the serene surroundings of
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. The alumni were
blessed with the gracious presence of Prof. N.K. Bansal,
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, SMVD University.
Prof. N.D. Mathur, Dean, College of Management, Prof.
B.C. Sharma, Director, School of Business & School of
Economics, Col. V.K. Kapoor, Registrar, SMVD University,
faculty members of College of Management and SMVD
University were also present on the occasion.
The alumni were welcomed with a colourful cultural
programme prepared by the students of College of
Management. While sharing their experiences, they
suggested their juniors to enjoy every moment of life at
the campus and at the same time put up hard work at
whatever they do, as in the corporate world it is the
excellence in work which really matters and helps one in
moving up the ladder in life. They interacted with the
faculty and the juniors and recalled all the wonderful
moments spent in the campus. To further strengthen the
relationship, Alumni Association was formed which shall
be headed by Prof. B.C. Sharma, Director School of
Business & School of Economics with Mr. Tushar Mahajan,
Mr. Vikas Gupta, Mr. Sushil Sharma & Ms. Vasudha Suden
as representatives from alumni. |

Commissioner of Income Tax, J & K visits Shri Mata
Vaishno Devi University

“Awareness amongst the public about their legal
responsibility to pay taxes and identification of
willful defaulters and taking coercive measures against
them is the two pronged strategy pursued by Income-Tax
department for identification of potential tax payers”,
said Mr. Virendra Singh, the Commissioner of Income-Tax,
J&K during his visit to the University along with his
team. Delivering a lecture on “History of taxation,
Management of Core functions, Black economy and Tax
Frauds” at College of Management, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi
University, the Commissioner of Income-Tax stressed on
the need for widening of tax base by having frequent
interaction with trade associations, educating the
public through question-answer sessions on the local T.V.
channels, seminars, awareness camps etc. Tracking the
history of taxation, he explained the pre-reform
structure and the evolution of the present Income Tax
Act, 1961 in India. He also made the students aware
about the reforms that were taken up like lowering of
Income Tax and Corporate-tax rates, simplification of
filing of returns of Income, lowering of rates of
Indirect taxes/duties, computerization of operations,
presumptive tax scheme for simplification and widening
of tax base etc. Mr. Virendra Singh also explained in
detail the number of functions performed by IT
authorities to make people pay for the civilized society
in the form of taxes like administrative, technical,
core functions etc. In the recent years, he explained,
the main thrust of their office is to develop a vision,
a positive work culture to foster team spirit amongst
their staff. He also discussed the global perspective in
relation to black money, tax evasion, effects of black
money on Indian economy, measures to unearth black money
and the like.

B.C. Sharma, Director, School of Business & School of
Economics also shared their views and suggestions on the
topic. Col. V.K Kapoor, Registrar, SMVD University was
also present on the occasion. Mr. Radhakrishnan, the
Finanace Officer of SMVD University thanked the guests
for sparing time from their busy schedule to enrich
faculty, students and staff with valuable knowledge and
information.

Touche (ME) visits College of Management

Mr. Abbas Ali Mirza, Partner, Deloitte and Touche (ME)
delivered a lecture on “Globalization of Financial
Reporting & the Way Forward” in the College of
Management, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. Quoting
various instances from the global arena he stressed on
the need for high value system amongst the corporate
sector. He said Indians have got strong value system and
that is the reason that they gain respect wherever they
go. He gave various real life examples stating why
Indians should be proud of themselves. 38% of doctors in
USA are Indians, 12% scientists in USA are Indians, 36%
of NASA scientists are Indians, the third richest man in
the world is an Indian, and Indians are occupying
various top positions in Multi-National Corporations and
so on. World history facts also speak in favour of India
as the cradle of the human race like invention of number
system, zero, establishment of first ever University in
Takshila in 700BC, Sanskrit being the most suitable
language for computer software etc.
He explained globalization of Financial Reporting and
adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards
(IFRS) by corporate sector. More than 8000 listed
companies are using IFRS in more than 100 countries. 200
of the Fortune 500 conglomerates use IFRS. The session
ended with a series of questions for the students
whereby Ms. Shalika Gupta, student of MBA won the prize
of a book on IFRS authored by Mr. Abbas Ali Mirza. |

In his interaction with the students of School of
Business, Prof. Dhotra discussed one of the most
important functions of Business Management that is Human
Resource Management. Throwing light on interesting
recent trends in Human Resource Management, he called
upon all the budding managers of tomorrow to be good at
this vital aspect of management.
According to him outsourcing of HR functions has emerged as an important
challenge. Use of Information Technology has added zinc
to the professional nature of Human Resource Management.
He also analyzed the various human resource practices
being practiced by different nations of the world. |

Mr. Rohit Kansal visited the School of Business, SMVDU
on 10th Feb., 2006. He was involved in teaching
Organizational Behaviour and Marketing Management to the
1st batch of MBA students during 2004-05.
During this visit he appreciated the overall development
of the students. He discussed some basic aspects of
Marketing using a case study. While interacting with
students, he talked about the various Marketing trends
in Europe and their impact on the Indian business
environment. |

visits School of Business.

Mr. Satish Koul accompanied by Mr. Sanjay, IT head
Bhilwara Jammu visited School of Business on 10th
of March, 06. He shared his life and work experiences
with the MBA students of School of Business. Giving a
slight flavour of humor he discussed the serious
hardships he faced in business in India and abroad.
He encouraged the students to become entrepreneurs and
asked them to inculcate the ability to generate or adopt
new innovations and to successfully bring them to
market. He advised them to gain experience by working in
a company and utilize that experience in starting a new
venture. With a strong belief in Empowerment of Women he
has been engaged in developing a large women workforce
at Bhilwara Jammu. Now he is planning to start a new
unit that will be run by only women. |

Mr. Ajay Gupta discussed the benefits which the
technology has given to the society in general and
business in particular. Explaining Enterprise Resource
Planning in detail he discussed the support it has given
to manufacturing, distribution and finance business
functions.
ERP which is the technological evolution of
Manufacturing Requirement Planning has developed through
the use of various Relational Database Systems, Computer
Aided Software Engineering, development tools and client
server architecture. Particularly beneficial for the
Information Technology students this lecture added to
their knowledge immensely. |

Kohli, Head, Finance, Coca- cola, Jammu replied
“Resource Management”. In the interaction with the
students of School of Business Mr. Sandeep Kohli gave an
overview of various finance operations conducted at
Coca-Cola, Jammu.
He discussed the importance of synergistic efforts of
various managers in the organization like production
manager, marketing manager, human resource manager,
sales manager and so on. |

Kashmir on Organizational Conflict and its
Management

Prof. Khursheed gave a detailed lecture on the topic
“Organizational Conflict and its Management” with an aim
to make the students understand organizational conflicts
created by behavioural and structural factors, how and
why conflicts arise at various levels of the
organization and to suggest ways and means to manage
organizational conflicts. Distinguishing between the
types of conflict as functional and dysfunctional, he
said that some amount of conflict (functional) is all
necessary for the survival and success of an
organization. |

By quoting Mahatma Gandhi “we must become the change we
want to see”, Prof. Khursheed Ali emphasized the
importance of building competencies in this competitive
world. He explained that in organizations competencies
can be developed only by empowering people, facilitating
people in attaining personal and career goals,
recognizing their efforts, communicating with them
openly and investing in them. He concluded with the ways
to empower people like providing resources,
developmental opportunities, information, recognition
and reward. |

Strategic Management |
|
Apprising students of Flexible Systems Management, Prof.
Sushil Kumar cited examples from various national and
multi-national companies which are using flexibility in
systems management. Toyota, Microsoft, McKinsey, ABB,
Nike, Wal-Mart, Compaq and the like were discussed.
Emphasizing flexibility he told that it is not a
destination but a journey, not a one time phenomenon but
a process of continuous change, is not demanding time
for action but generating spontaneity and agility, is
not to create chaos but to bring a natural organic order
out of it. Prof. Kumar was very keen in stressing that
flexibility and control goes hand in hand with the help
of which only order can be achieved. He concluded his
lecture by discussing the SAP LAP Model (Situation Actor
Process, Learning Action and Performance) of General
Problem Solving. |

In his lecture on Indian Ethos and Management Prof.
Hemant Indurkar beautifully related Indian Ethos from
Bhagwad Gita and Mahabharata with the management
principles and practices. He stressed on team spirit by
saying, “Coming together is a beginning, Keeping
together is a progress and working together is a
success” and gave several examples from Mahabharata and
Indian Management.
During the second day of his visit, he delivered a
lecture on the basic concepts of Marketing Management
giving relevant examples from national and
multi-national companies. |

Supply Chain Management Practices in India

During the interaction with the MBA students in School
of Business, Dr. Banwet gave an overview of one of the
most important field in India and in the whole world
that is Supply Chain Management.
He explained that Supply Chain Management is primarily
concerned with efficient integration of suppliers,
warehouses, factories and stores so as to produce
merchandise in right quantities distribute it to the
right locations and at right time. He discussed the
various functions involved like forecasting, purchasing,
inventory management, information management, quality
assurance, scheduling, production, delivery and customer
service. |

Prof. V. D. Sharma, ex-head, Department of Management
Studies, Kurukshetra University, visited College of
Management, SMVD University. Interacting with the
Management students, he provided valuable inputs on what
makes a good manager. Stressing on decision–making
skills of a manager, he said that it is this process
which can make or mar an organization. He explained the
importance of concepts like Emotional Stability and
Vision with the help of simple day to day examples from
our lives. He also threw some light on the difference in
the functioning of public and private sector
enterprises. |

Management, Prof. D. K. Banwet stressed upon the
importance of effective communication skills in
succeeding in all spheres of life particularly in the
work life of a person. He said that in today’s
competitive and constantly changing world not only IQ
and EQ are important but SQ is also important which
stands for Spiritual Quotient. SQ can act as a major
stress buffer in this highly competitive world. He
mesmerized the students with his simple talk on a very
complex subject like communication. |

Dr. Manoj Kumar visited College of Management, SMVD
University. He stayed for four days in the University
campus. During his stay, he interacted with the students
and enriched them with the knowledge about various
emerging issues in Corporate Finance. He discussed
Accounting Standards and their role in managing the
finance of big business houses in the corporate world.
He elaborated upon the integration of Indian Accounting
Standards with the world standards. He also shared his
knowledge about Corporate Financial Reporting i.e.
revenue recognition, inventory management, depreciation
accounting, cash flow, fund flow and the like. |

Prof. Vashisth explained and analysed different current
and core issues of Business Economics and Environment.
In his lecture, he elaborated the empirical managerial
theory of Limit Pricing and theory of Sales Maximising
and its applicability for corporate sector of developing
countries like India. He also emphasized on the
relevance of these economic theories in day to day
decisions of business world. |

century: Challenges & Opportunities”

A one day Student Seminar was organized on the theme
“Business Environment in the 21st century:
Challenges & Opportunities” at College of Management,
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University on 25th
Nov., 2006. The Seminar was sponsored by Aircel which
provided the platform to the students of different
Universities to deliberate on the topic.
On this occasion Prof. N.K. Bansal, the Hon’ble
Vice-Chancellor SMVD University remarked that with
increasing productivity and excellence India can avail
the available business and trade opportunities in the
globalized world. The keynote speaker Prof. R.D. Sharma,
Rector Kathua campus, Jammu University emphasized on
grabing of opportunities in the era of globalization
with the positive competitive edge. Marketing & Sales
head of Aircel Jammu also analysed the business
opportunity availed by their organization in J&K region.
Prof. N.D. Mathur, Dean College of Management and Prof.
B.C. Sharma, Director School of Business & School of
Economics also expressed their views and highly inspired
the students on this memorable occasion.
More than 35 students from the esteemed institutions
like The Business School, Jammu University main campus
as well as Kathua Campus, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah
University, ICFAI Jammu, Center for Tourism and
Hospitality Management –Jammu University and students of
School of Business and School of Economics of SMVDU
presented research papers on the various fundamental
challenges and opportunities in the Business
Environment. Budding managers from Business Schools
emphasized on the topics like Retail trading,
e-commerce, Industrial Sickness, Business Process
Outsourcing, Self Help Groups, Human Development Index,
Capital Account Convertibility etc. Mr. Anmol of Jammu
University got the first prize for best paper
presentation. He presented a paper on “Global Brand in
the Making: Made in India Brand”. The 2nd and
3rd prize were won by Ms. Misha Aima and Mr.
Sandeep of Jammu University. The Seminar gave a platform
to the students to share their intellectual views on
paradigm shift in the Business Environment and relate it
with the challenges and opportunities available. |

WORKSHOP
A three day highly interactive programme was held in the School
of Business from 21st February to 23rd
February, 2006 which was designed to build the confidence and
critical interview skills required by the students who want to
ensure success at their first job interview. Mr. Maruti Sharma
of Power Communication, an international trainer and coach,
ensured that the students shall increase their strike potential
in the placement interviews by helping them develop the
necessary core competence skills.
