Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) has been established under THE JAMMU AND KASHMIR SHRI MATA VAISHNO DEVI UNIVERSITY ACT, 1999.an Act of the J&K State Legislature (ACT No. XII of 1999 dated 12th May 1999) as an autonomous, highly Technical & fully Residential University.
The University started functioning as an academic unit in Aug 2004 when it was inaugurated on 19th August 2004 at the hands of the then Hon'ble President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Dr. Kalam also delivered the first lecture to the students of the University.

The Design of the logo looks like a Lotus, a symbol of regeneration or a flame. If we see it from a particular angle, it also looks like 'OM', the Supreme Word. The three green bars are symbolic representation of three holy peaks of Trikuta Hills and / or the three 'pindies' in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. The Sun, the giver of Light, Warmth, Time, Direction, Life Force, Energy, Power, Radiance and Enlightenment have been shown surrounded by radiating rays going out to nine planets of the Solar System. All this is , however, left to the imagination of the viewer.
The English version of the motto is "GOD (BHRAMA) IS SCIENCE". 'Bhrama' has been defined as something or someone who nourishes the universe and makes it grow. Science matches the definition wonderfully because science over the years has also done the same. If the world population is any indication, science has done very well indeed. We have not only become the dominant species, we also have grown to an unprecedented numbers. Moreover, the reach of the modern scientists has spread much beyond the sun and the moon and they are now eyeing the far-reaches of the universe from where even the light takes years and centuries to reach the earth. Science has given man god-like powers to create and destroy and so for he has used these powers more or less responsibly. Let us hope the good sense continues to prevail and the mankind continues to expand the boundaries of Human Knowledge, so that science and the spirituality ultimately meet in a confluence of superhuman achievements.
The level of economic growth of an economy finds its strong roots into the level, strength and intensity of the entrepreneurial activities on its soil. In order to sustain the entrepreneurial activities, there are requirements for the able support and promotion of emerging technological and knowledge-based innovative ventures that may imbibe the nurturing of ideas from professionals beyond the traditional/ conventional activities of the enterprises. The entrepreneurial ideas have to be fostered and developed in a conducive environment before they become attractive for the purpose of commercialization; besides a continuous technological and managerial support have to be provided.
In the above perspective, the SMVDU has established Entrepreneurship Development Cell, SMVDU. The academic institutions, which are leaders in developing human resources with some modulation and change in focus could churn techno-entrepreneurs on a continuous basis, which accelerates the process of economic development and growth. On the same lines, EDC SMVDU in the campus, undertakes this role and blend technical inputs with entrepreneurial and managerial skills in academic programmes and train the students as well as youth of the state for entrepreneurial challenges through entrepreneurial awareness/motivation development program. It provides effective linkages with various departments of the campus to bring about entrepreneurial culture for optimal utilization of the expertise, resources and know-how available. It also networks with other agencies involved in entrepreneurship development and conducts short term courses, MDPs, FDPs, ESDPs, Business Plans Competitions, Entrepreneurship Awareness Programs/Camps etc. in association with various government and non-government bodies.
Major objectives of EDC, SMVDU includes to provide entrepreneurial training to the youth in the region; to promote rural and women entrepreneurship in the region; to provide rigorous training for entrepreneurial development in the courses being taught in different schools/ departments in the University and to make the unemployed youth of the region familiar about starting and running small and rural industry successfully.

In pursuance of its Action Plan for performance evaluation, assessment and accreditation and quality up-gradation of institutions of higher education, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore proposes that every accredited institution should establish an Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQA) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure. Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the DQA will become a part of the institution’s system and work towards realisation of the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. The prime task of the DQA is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the overall performance of institutions. For this, during the postaccreditation period, it will channelize all efforts and measures of the institution towards promoting its holistic academic excellence.
The work of the DQA is the first step towards internalization and institutionalization of quality enhancement initiatives. Its success depends upon the sense of belongingness and participation it can inculcate in all the constituents of the institution. It will not be yet another hierarchical structure or a record-keeping exercise in the institution. It will be a facilitative and participative voluntary system/unit/organ of the institution. It has the potential to become a vehicle for ushering in quality enhancement by working out planned interventionist strategies to remove deficiencies and enhance quality like the “Quality Circles” in industries.
“Harnessing excellent academic environment infused with integrity, professionalism and human values for continuous intellectual & personal development through participative and transparent mechanism.”
