SMVDU Katra: A Two-Day International Conference on “The Problem of Consciousness and the Brain-Brahman Dichotomy” was held at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, organized by the Dept. of Philosophy & Culture from 27-28 February. The inaugural session began with a welcome note by Dr. V. K. Tripathi, Head Dept. of Philosophy & Culture. The concept note was presented by Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi, the convener of the conference and inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Vandhana Sharma, Dean Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The key-note lecture was delivered by Prof. A. K. Mukhopadhyaya, Head Laboratory Medicine, AIIMS, who marvelously connected the leading trends in neuroscience research and philosophical studies on consciousness. Dr. Angus Alexander James McBlane from IIT Gandhinagar spoke on “Brain Body Flesh: Merleau-Ponty on the ‘Problem’ of Consciousness”. Prof. H.S. Prasad from University of Delhi, Dr. Hari Narayan from IIT Jodhpur and S. Siddhartha from NIMHANS were some prominent speakers. Delegates from IIT Bombay, Manipal University, University of Jammu, and Presidency University also participated. Total 27 research papers were presented and thoughtfully deliberated upon.

The issue of consciousness is closely related to nature of reality, and therefore with world view of physics. What physics tells us about our universe and what we feel about our consciousness are in direct conflict. Therefore, the topic of the conference was very important since it addressed this spiritual concern about the nature and meaning of human consciousness vis-à-vis, materialism supported by modern physics. The concluding session was chaired by Dr. P. P. Singh from Govt. College for Women, Parade. The report of the conference was presented in the valedictory by the convener and the vote of thanks was delivered by the Head of Dept. Philosophy & Culture. Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Mr. Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Dr. Ashoka K. Tarai, Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi were present.

Faculty of Sciences in accordance with the guidelines of University Grants Commission, Govt. of India; celebrated National Science Day on 28th February, 2017 on the theme “Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons”. It is a very worthy cause that UGC has chosen this theme for this year's celebration on the Birth Anniversary of renowned Indian Physicist Sir. C.V. Raman. Science is for everyone and it is never ending. It is this pursuit that has excited young students to take up Science as a career leading to the advancements in technology that have greatly helped the differently abled persons to meet their daily needs. Thirty differently abled students of Red Cross Home for Disabled, Jammu; students of Higher Secondary Schools Panthal and Sira Colony participated in the celebrations. Under the able guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SMVDU – Patron of the event that the Day was celebrated at the Matrika Auditorium, SMVD University on 28th February, 2017. The Chief Guest of the Inaugural Session was Maj Gen. (Retd.)Mr. S.K. Razdan, (Kirti Chakra Awardee) Gurgaon, who presented the Key Note Address correlating modern science with ancient Vedic literature and verses from great Indian poets like Kabir Das and Ravi Das. He listed out the reasons for lack of interest amongst students these days in studies due to many distractive activities. He stressed on the need for promotion of Science and Technology teaching and the role of teachers and mentors in shaping the careers of young students. The Introductory address was presented by Prof. V.K. Bhat, Dean Faculty of Sciences and Convener while Prof. V. Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Co-Convener of the event presented the Valedictory Address. Dr. Sharada M. Potukuchi, Assoc. Prof., Department of Biotechnology and Organizing Secretary of the event presented the Vote of Thanks on the occasion. The Organizing Committee was supported by Faculty Members of various Departments of the University, Dr. Yugal Khajuria, Head, DoP; Dr. A.K. Das, Head, DoM; Dr. Kuldeep Raj, AP, DoM; Dr. Sandeep Bhougal, AP, DoM; Dr. Surrender Singh, AP, DoM; Dr. Ram Prakash, AP, DoP; Mr. Pankaj Biswas, AP, DoP; Dr. Rakesh Kumar, AP, DoBT; Mr. Swastik, AP, DoECE and Mr. Anuj Mahajan, AP, DoCSE. The Resource persons of Technical Sessions included Dr. Manish Kumar Varshney, Orthopedic Surgeon, SMVDNSH, Kakryal; Ms. Geeta Mehta, Scientist (Retd.), CSIR-IIIM, Jammu; Physiotherapist and a team of Expert medical practitioners from various branches - Dr. Pooja, Dr. Shelly, Dr. Gopika, Dr. Preeti from SMVDNSH, Kakryal. The specially abled students were very happy to be part of the event and appreciated the efforts of the University in sparing time out for educating and entertaining them with a short Cultural programme staged by the PG students of Maths, Physics, Biotechnology, Computer Sciences.

SMVDU Katra: The 28th meeting of the Academic Council of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University was held on 26th Feb. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sanjeev Jain, the Vice Chancellor of the University. Prof. Sunil Pandey, Prof. P. K. Jain, Prof. K. K. Biswas, Prof. Rajesh Srivastav, Prof. S. Dharmaraja and Sh. Lokesh Saxena were the external experts in the meeting. The Meeting began with a welcome note by the Registrar Prof. V. K. Bhat. The agenda items were presented by Dr. Sumeet Gupta, Dean Academic Affairs. Prof. V. Varma, Dean Faculty of Engineering, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyaya, Dean Faculty of Management, Dr. Vandana Sharma, Dean Humanities and Social Sciences and all the Heads of various departments attended the meeting.

In the meeting, concern over obtaining students feedback about their academic needs while reviewing and upgrading the curriculum was expressed. It was also impressed upon that while designing curriculum, the need of the industry and the compatibility of the curriculum with the corporate and industry requirements must be kept in mind. Introduction of self-study courses, out-of-the-class learning, industry exposure were also under emphasis. The external experts also expressed the need to conduct parent-teachers’ meet and it was highlighted that such meetings should be well planned and be part of the academic calendar of the University. Admission policies for NRI/foreign sponsored students, students with disability were also discussed. The expert members also suggested that the curriculum, benchmarking etc. should be in alignment with the National Institutional Ranking Framework of MHRD, of which public perception of the institution is an important component. The need was felt of training students about technical writing, interpersonal and other soft-skills and special training for writing research papers as the same is becoming a degree requirement for many programs. Launching of an MBA Executive program was also discussed. Policies for attracting senior faculty with outstanding record were also discussed. Numerous good decisions for students were taken with regard to facilitating their academic performance. The meeting ended with thanks by the Vice Chancellor to all experts.

SMVDU, Katra: The Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, Prof. Sanjeev Jain today flagged off a team of 15 students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering to participate in Ecokart-2017 at Gurugram from 28th February to 3rd March, 2017.

Ecokart is an annual event in which teams from all over India participate to showcase their design and innovation skills in the fabrication of the Ecokart vehicle. It is pertinent to mention here that SMVDU Team “Mavericx” is the only team from J&K which is participating in the event. Earlier team “Mavericx” SMVDU qualified the virtual round and stood 16th among 103 teams all over India. The team was mentored jointly by Mr. Sanjay Mohan Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering Mr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Mr. Ankush Raina, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Around 50 teams from all over the country are set to participate in the dynamic round scheduled from 28th February to 3rd March, 2017.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the team members for the successful fabrication and lauded the efforts put in by the faculty, students and the workshop staff especially the staff associated with the automobile lab Mr. Chandan Kumar. Prof. V. K. Bhat, Registrar SMVDU, Prof V Verma, Dean Faculty of Engineeringand Dr. Balbir Singh, HoD, Department of Mechanical Engineering also conveyed best wishes to the team. Mr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, faculty coordinator of the event briefed all the dignitaries present on the ceremony about the Ecokart event and conveyed his thanks to all the persons who made the event a success especially the staff of the central workshop. Mr. Akash Srivastava Team Leader conveyed his thanks to the Vice Chancellor and faculty for providing an opportunity to participate in the Ecokart-2017 event. The ceremony ended with the demonstration of endurance of the Ecokart vehicle by the team driver.


Dr. Ramesh Ganju from The Ohio State University delivered a special lecture on “Novel inflammatory circuits modulating breast tumor microenvironment” in the Department of Biotechnology, SMVDU. Dr. Ganju is Scott Endowed Professor & Vice- Chair Department of Pathology & Experimental Pathology in The Ohio State University, USA. He is an expert in the field of tumor microenvironment as is evident from his vast number of publications in highly reputed journals. The major focus of Dr. Ganju's lab is to determine the role of chemokines, especially CXCL12, and various inflammatory molecules, such as S100A7, and anti-inflammatory molecules, such as Slit2 and cannabinoids, in pathogenesis of various diseases.

The lecture of Dr. Ramesh Ganju was attended by faculty & scholars of Department of Biotechnology & Dr. V. Verma, H.O.D Biotechnology laid stress on the special lectures which are important in rising the level of science in the department.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar, a cancer biologist & Assistant Professor invited him to visit the institute and present a special lecture. His visit was facilitated by the administration of SMVDU. He visited various labs in the department & was very much impressed by the infrastructure & instrumentation in the department. He also had a brief interaction with the lab members of Dr. Rakesh Kumar and was made aware about the activities going on in the cancer biology Lab. He also expressed his interest in developing joint Indo-US collaborative projects & also to explore the possibility of exchange of scholars under different schemes of both Governments of India and USA. Dr. Ganju also met Honorable vice chancellor of SMVDU Dr. Sanjeev Jain in his chamber where he was felicitated by presenting him with a memento of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi as a token of appreciation for visiting the University. Dr. Sanjeev Jain proposed that collaboration between the two institutes should be explored & reiterated that SMVDU will take necessary steps regarding that in future with a mission to make SMVDU a world class institute.
