SMVDU Katra, 1st April 2019. A four-week Orientation Program commenced from 1st April 2019 at the Faculty Development Centre (FDC) of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. Dr. Bijoy Boruah, Professor of Philosophy, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Ropar, was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session which was presided by Prof. (Dr.) D. Mukhopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Management & Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Coordinator, FDC, SMVDU. After the welcome address, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Pabitra K. Jena, Coordinator of the program, introduced the scheme of the topics to be covered during one month which will conclude on 30th April 2019. In his inaugural address, Prof. Boruah, emphasized the need of an intensive interaction between the senior professors of various disciplines and the young recruits of the universities and colleges. The orientation program is organized through the Faculty Development Centre (funded by MHRA, Govt. of India under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching scheme) to facilitate personal, instructional, organizational and professional development of young teachers of higher education. The inaugural session was conducted by Dr. Anil Kumar Tewari (Co-coordinator of the program) and Mr. Anoop Sharma (Co-coordinator) delivered the vote of thanks. The program is being attended by the young faculty members of various institutions of higher learning across the country. Eminent professors of various disciplines are invited to guide them in the formation days of their career.

SMVDU Katra, March 2019. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organized a one-day National Seminar on “Yoga and Naturopathy for Well-being” under the University Social Responsibility (USR) on 30th Mar. 2019. The seminar was organized in collaboration with Archna Yogayatan (AY), New Delhi, and International Federation of Yoga Professionals (IFYP), New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Management and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, SMVDU, in the presence of Dr. M.K. Taneja, Senior ENT & Cochlear Implant Surgeon and Member, Governing Body, Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India, Dr. S.N. Yadav, Director, AY and an International Yoga expert, Dr. Anil Kumar Tewari, Head of the School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) and Faculty In-charge, USR, Mr. P.C. Kanal, (retd.) Deputy General Manager, R&D Centre, Indian Oil Corporation and a social worker, Mrs. Sushila Biswas, Senior Naturopath associated with AY. The other prominent persons included Prof. Ashok Sharma, Head, School of Physics, Dr. Amitabh Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature, Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi, SoPC, Dr. Supinder Singh, Medical Officer, Mr. Dayal, Yoga instructor, SMVD College of Nursing and DPS, Katra, and other faculty and staff members. The participants included more than 300 students of various streams of study and people from nearby villages of the university. The program began at 7:30 AM with the Yoga and Meditation session by Dr. Yadav (AY), and Mr. Gurmel (SMVDU). In the first session, Dr. Taneja enlightened the audience with respect to the effect of various pranayam techniques and chanting of mantras. Dr. Yadav and Mrs. Biswas explained the effects of various herbs and grains which can be used for the nourishment and healthy diet in the kitchen. The participants were shown a proper method of breathing which would save us from many ailments. The effect of mud- and water-therapy was also demonstrated. The main objective of the seminar was to create awareness among the participants about the activities to be adopted in daily life to keep themselves mentally and physically fit. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Paras Dubey, 5th year M.Sc (eco.) who coordinated the event with Manglam Mishra, 4th B. Tech, CSE and other student volunteers.

Faculty members and students of the School of Biotechnology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, took part in the 6th J&K Women Science Congress (JKWSC) organized by Govt. PG College for Women, Gandhi-nagar, Jammu, in collaboration with J&K Science, Technology & Innovation Council, Dept. of Science & Technology, J&K. The main theme of the JKWSC was "Research & Women in Science, Technology & Mathematics Representation, Challenges & Opportunities" in the spectrum of traditional as well as modern sciences. The event was designed to spread the understanding of the need to empower women who constitute nearly 50% of the population and involve them in nation building activities, tapping their potential as innovators. This is in line with one of the endeavors under the leadership and encouragement of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, to engage more young female minds of the university in the scientific community to participate in research. As part of the event of the Congress, Dr. Sharada M. Potukuchi, Faculty, SMVDU, deliberated on the topic "Funding Schemes for Science Graduates - A World of Opportunities" in view of the constantly changing scenario in the country which has enabled increased participation of women in science. She also mentored the students of Biotechnology to participate in the proceedings wherein, Ms. Vidushi Abrol, Research Scholar, made an oral presentation, titled "Lost: Pioneer of Scientific Revolution". Ms. Aruna Vir, B.Tech. 6th Semester presented poster titled "Single Copy Number Variation of PER3 Ge3ne in Relation with Ovarian Cancer Patients of Jammu region" coauthored by Ms. Sonali Verma, and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Asst. Prof., Biotechnology. Ms. Nitika Sharma, M.Sc. 2nd Semester student made an independent presentation titled "Sirtuins in Ageing and Cancer" for which she competed amongst 50 participants and was awarded the Consolation Prize for her Poster Presentation. Prof. V. Verma, Head, School of Biotechnology applauded the efforts of the Faculty and students in creating a sustained platform for demonstration of women's contribution in science in India of behalf of the university.

SMVDU Katra, March 2019. The School of Biotechnology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), in collaboration with Dept. Of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, organised one-day Bioinformatics workshop on “Trends in Genomics and Proteomics”, focused on the next generation sequencing and computational Proteomics aspects of Biotechnology. Prof. V. Verma, Coordinator and Head, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, emphasized on exploration of new fields of Biotechnology Research as a career opportunity to promote research and development in India. He also inspired researchers to take challenges to perform beyond their usual capabilities to excel. The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Akhlaq Bashir, a Dr. D. S. Kothari Fellow from Jammu University. On the onset, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Organizing Secretary of the Workshop and Senior Faculty, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, informed the participants about the scope of the workshop. The event was attended by in-house and out station delegates of reputed universities and institutes. Mr. PS Salathia, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, took a session on “Bioinformatics Approach in Immunology”, followed by a technical hands-on to the participants by Ms. Sonali Verma and Supriya Hakeem. Parallel Sessions were also conducted during the hands-on training. Dr. Kumar expressed his gratitude to Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, for his support and motivation, and also thanked Professor V. Verma, Head, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, for encouraging him to organize the workshop. Student, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, has been awarded the Young Scientist Award (Special Session) for her Oral Presentation titled "Development of in vitro Conservation Protocol and Confirmation of Traditionally Acclaimed Medicinal Properties of Less Explored Medicinal Herb Nanorrhinum ramosissimum" at the " National Seminar on Increasing Participation of Women in Science & Technology" organized by the Equal Opportunity Cell, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, in collaboration with National Commission for Women, Govt. of India on March 16, 2019. The focal theme of the Seminar was envisaged keeping in view the low representation of Indian women in science and technology workforce.

Ms. Jyotsna Sharma has recently submitted her Ph. D. thesis under the joint supervision of Dr. Raju Shankarayan, Assistant Prof. and Dr. Sharada M. Potukuchi, Associate Prof., School of Biotechnology, SMVDU. Her research work was highly appreciated for the in vitro regeneration and micropropagation protocol that has been established which to our knowledge is a first report for a lesser studied antidiabetic medicinal herb Nanorrhinum ramosissimum.

SMVDU Katra, 27 March 2019. Ashutosh Kumar Singh (Architecture Batch 2017) and Harish Sharma (Architecture Batch 2016), two brilliant alumni of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, have secured AIR 8th Rank in the GATE Architecture 2019. The students give credit to their alma-mater and teachers for this remarkable feat. They also expressed their gratitude to Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, for providing them with top-class education environment on campus, and for motivating them. Ashutosh Kumar reported to Media Cell, SMVDU, that he is also a Gold Medalist at B.Arch level, and previously also secured AIR 2nd Rank in CUCET, and he wants to pursue his career in ‘Sustainable Urban Development’, whereas Harish Sharma is interested in Building Information Modelling, and previously received Pidilite Award for ‘Optimum Space Utilisation in Architectural Design, and also secured AIR 5th Rank in ISRO 2017 Written Test. Notably, the academics and research graph of SMVDU has reached new heights under the guidance of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU.

Ms. Vidushi Abrol, Research Scholar, Dept. of Biotechnology, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, (SMVDU), has brought laurels to the institution by bagging 1st Prize in Oral Presentation for her paper, titled "Improvement of Tolypocladium inflatum Through Chemical Mutagenesis for the High Yield of Cyclosporine" at National Conference on Fungal Biology: Recent Trends and Future Prospects & 44th Annual Meeting of The Mycological Society of India, held at University of Jammu. Ms. Abrol has been pursuing her PhD under the joint supervision of Dr. Sundeep Jaglan, Scientist, CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, and Dr. Sharada M. Potukuchi, Associate Professor, Dept. of Biotechnology, SMVDU. Her research work has been highly appreciated and in the past couple of months, and she has achieved many awards including 2nd Prize in the oral presentation at three-day National Conference on “Interdisciplinary Aspects of Plant Sciences” and 27th APSI Scientist Meet, which was organised by the School of Biotechnology, SMVDU, Katra, in collaboration with the Academy of Plant Sciences, India, during 2nd-4th Nov., 2017. Ms. Vidushi Abrol thanked Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, for providing her a high-class research environment at SMVDU, and expressed her gratitude to her supervisors.

SMVDU Katra, March 2019. The Faculty/Staff Cricket Tournament of SMVDU concludes, wherein total 5 teams participated during the event. The final match was played between Vaishno Tigers and Dean of Students (DoS) teams. The DoS team captained by Dr. Yugal Khajuria (Dean Student Welfare) defeated Vaishno Tigers team by 1 wicket in faculty/staff cricket tournament organized by the Board for Sports Activities at SMVD University. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Vaishno Tigers team led by Sudesh Kumar scored a decent total of 102 runs in the stipulated 15 overs. In reply, the DoS team chased the total in the last over by losing 9 wickets, thus DoS team won the match by 1 wicket. Mr. Aman Thakur player of the Dos team scored highest team runs 34 off 23 balls and Shubham Kumar played an unbeaten knock of 23 runs off 8 balls. Rakesh Kumar and Sudesh Kumar player of both teams took 3-3 wickets in the match. Sanjeev Vadawan and Tinku were the umpires for the final match. Sudesh Kumar was the scorer for the same. Rajiv Kumar, Incharge Sports of University and Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor gave best wishes to the winning team.

SMVDU Katra, 16th March 2019. Ten-day specialised acting training workshop came to an end at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. The workshop was the first under the series "The Need for Right Training", which is an initiative by Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi (Ministry of Culture), GoI, to reach out across the nation and provide the trainees with the world class training in acting. During the workshop the aspiring actors, mostly B. Tech. students of the university, got a real life exposure to acting.

The workshop was conducted by Mr. Vikram Sharma, an internationally trained actor and trainer, also a visiting faculty at the prestigious National School of Drama, New Delhi. More than 25 students were trained in the workshop out of 60- 70 applications. The final day witnessed a valedictory ceremony where all the participants were awarded with certificates of participation. The students of the workshop also shared their views about training, they said that this workshop would help them immensely in understanding the actor’s process of self exploration. The workshop was organised by Mr. Gaurav Jamwal and convened by Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma, President, Board of Cultural Activities at SMVDU. Mr. Sharma expressed his gratitude to Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, for motivating them for organising such events. Further, Dr. Sanjeev Jain said that extra-curricular events were part and parcel of outcome based education system, and a good institute must take care of the holistic development of their students.

SMVDU Katra, 25 March 2019. The School of Languages & Literature, a leading and research-oriented department at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, has organised a two-day National Doctoral Conclave (25-26 March 2019), to promote the academics and research environment in and around the campus. The two day event was divided into paper presentations and research workshop. On the day one, i.e. 25 March 2019, the doctoral students presented and showcased their researches, on day two, i.e. 26 March 2019, a workshop to be organised on research methods. During the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Veerendra Mishra (Banasthali Vidyapeeth); Prof. Deepshikha Kotwal (Central Uni. of Jammu) and Prof. Sucheta Pathania (Uni. of Jammu) were present as Resource Persons. At the outset, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, graced the event as the Chief Guest, and encouraged the School of Languages & Literature for organising such activities. Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head of the School and Coordinator of the Conclave, threw light on the importance of research and knowledge in the growth of an institution. One-day brain storming meeting sponsored by the Dept. of Science Technology and Innovation Council, Govt. of J&K, on emerging health issues in rural women from J&K Region with special emphasis on maternal and child health was conducted at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. The meeting started with a welcome address by Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Organizing Secretary and Principal Coordinator, Indian Council of Medical Research-Center of Advanced Research (ICMR-CAR), SMVDU. The meeting addressed the crucial issues related to maternal and child health. Prof. RNK Bamezai from JNU and Prof. Geeta Bamezai from IIMC, New Delhi, chaired the meeting. Representative of majority of the institutes of the State attended the meeting: Prof. Ashraf Ganie, SKIMS; Prof. Ravinder Gupta, ASCOMS Jammu; Prof. Bhat, Prof. Verma, Dr. Bairwa, Dr. Supinder Singh and Dr. Saurabh of SMVDU; and Prof. Qadri, UoK. A meeting of Special Committee for monitoring the TEQIP-III project was held on Monday, 25th March 2019, at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, where the agenda items related to the procurement of equipments & software, organizing conferences, short term courses, FDPs, industrial visits, placement activities, soft skills training, special lectures by experts from industry, MoUs, startup activities, green environment activities, equity related activities, and others were discussed. The meeting was Chaired by the Padam Bhushan Prof. K. L. Chopra, Former Director (IIT, Kharagpur); and also graced by Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, and Mr. Amit Vermani, Deputy CEO, Shrine Board. Other attendees were: Prof. VK Bhat, Registrar, SMVDU; Sh. Romesh Singh (KAS) Finance Officer, SMVDU; and Deans and Heads of various Schools and Sections, SMVDU. The focus was on the maximal utilisation of funds provided by the World Bank for developmental activities related to academics and research. Dr. Sumeet Gupta, Dean, Academics, SMVDU, informed the committee that NPTEL/SWAYAM has scored Grade A to SMVDU for its good performance. The meeting ended up with a formal Vote of Thanks.

SMVDU Katra, 14 March 2019. Prof. V. Verma, Head, School of Biotechnology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, attended the 2019 International Conference on Research in Life Sciences & Healthcare (ICRLSH) at Dubai (UAE), and delivered an invited talk on “A multiplex PCR assay to detect important human pathogens like Shigella, Escherichia coli and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli in milk”. The conference was attended by about 200 scientists, professors, researchers from various countries. He also chaired one of the sessions in the conference and also been awarded with the Best Presenter award. Prof. Verma expressed his gratitude to Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, for his continuous support and motivation for the research activities in the university.
