SMVDU Katra, April 2019. A workshop was organized by the Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra , on ‘Gender Sensitization in Classroom’ for the students and teachers of Jammu Sanskriti School, Jammu on 30th April 2019 to stimulate the stakeholders on gender equality in education. Dr. Ratna Chandra, Chairperson, GSCASH, SMVDU, along with Dr. Kamini Pathania, Member, GSCASH, and Ms. Sonika Gupta, Faculty, School of Computer Sciences, conducted the workshop. Message regarding, concern for gender equality in and through education and understanding of the prevalent misconceptions of gender were highlighted in the special lectures. The lectures were followed by interactive counseling sessions by the team. The lectures focused on the CBSE initiative for transmission of knowledge free of gender-bias, promoting and facilitating unbiased participation of boys and girls in learning process and creating an overall academic milieu for gender sensitive learning process in schools. The workshop was organized with the impetus and abutment of Prof. (Dr.) D. Mukhopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, and is consistent with the efforts of the committee for holding activities related to gender awareness within the university and educational institutions of the state. Ms Rohini Aima , Principal cum Vice Chairperson, Jammu Sanskriti School, thanked the GSCASH team, and the event was coordinated by Ms. Nidhi Kohli of Jammu Sanskriti School.

The inter house Kabaddi and Kho Kho tournaments of ‘SARANG’ 2019 under women and men categories respectively, came to an end today at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University. 5 houses namely Aakash, Agni, Jal, Prithvi and Vayu participated with great zest and zeal in the tournaments under both Women and Men categories. The matches were played in knock out basis in the preliminary phases which were followed by semi finals and finals.

In another nail biting final that took place today itself, the Vayu women proved themselves by defeating the Prithvi team.The tournaments were successfully coordinated by the student coordinators, Rahul Sharma and Anmol Sharma. The matches were officiated by Mr. Sucha Singh, Mr. Sumit Sharma and Mr. Balbir Singh, who were also seen guiding the students to showcase their best, throughout.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Ashutosh Vasishtha, Prof. Ashok Kumar Sharma, Mr. Vinod Sharma, Administrative Officer, Mr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, Mr. Rajiv Kumar, Incharge Sports, Mr. Surender Singh CSO, graced the occasion and congratulated all the winners.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. The first quarter of the year 2019 has brought good news for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra. Under the able leadership of Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, the university has improved its ranking and is ranked at 85th position as against 94th rank obtained last year in the Engineering Universities/Institutes of India, in the recently announced NIRF 2019 rankings declared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Not only the 9th rank rise is a matter of joy for students and faculty members, but also quite significantly, the School of Business, SMVDU, has entered into the Elite Club of top 100 Business Schools of the country. Besides this, the university has retained its position among the top 150 universities of the country. Moreover, in the overall ranking, the university stands among the top 150 institutions of higher learning in the country for the first time. The faculty members and administration is looking forward to looking forward to more such endeavours in future which establish the name of the University not only in India but abroad too.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019: SMVDU Students attended six day ‘Students Excellence & Learning Program’ (SELP) being organized by The Art of Living at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji started The Art of Living Society which is engaged in spreading human values and harmony in the society. The one-week TEQIP-III sponsored workshop coordinated by Dr. Balbir Singh, Associate Professor, SMVDU and Dr. Sumeet Gupta, TEQIP Coordinator, SMVDU. Mr. Naresh Pareek, Faculty from The Art of Living, conducted lively workshop in which more than 60 students shown keen interest and experienced life changing transformation. The program focused on how to reduce stress, anxiety and encourage creativity and innovation among participants. The program helped students in improving their learning capabilities through improved confidence and concentration.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. At Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, learning and playing go hand-in-hand. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, states that the spirit of learning and to progress ahead is ever kindled by sportsmanship. An inter-house Kabaddi tournament was organized at SMVDU, Katra, under Annual Sports Fest, ‘SARANG’ 2k19. Total 10 teams (5 boys and 5 girls) from different Houses participated in a four day tournament, catering and capturing the interest of the young talents. Among 10 different teams Vayu House and Jal House for boys secured their berth for the final match. Aakash House was able to secure the 3rd position under captainship of Mr. Nakshatar Sharma. Among girls, the Vayu House will face the Prithvi House in the finals, and Agni house was able to secure the 3rd position in close encounter between Agni and Aaksh by the point difference of 5 under the captaincy of Miss Ria Manhas. The tournament was co-ordinated by Mr. Rahul Sharma. Coach Mr. Sucha Singh, Mr. Balbir Singh and Mr. Sumit Sharma who officiated the tournament. Dr. Yugal Khajuria, Dean, Students Welfare, SMVDU, and I/c Sports, SMVDU, Rajiv Kumar conveyed their best wishes to the finalists.

The matches were played in the knock out basis in the preliminary phases which were followed by semi-finals and finals. In an exciting contest which witnessed an enthusiastic participation, the Prithvi team went on to register a fantastic win over the fiercely competitive Vayu team in Kho Kho (Women), whereas in another nail biting final that took place today itself, the Vayu men proved themselves by defeating the Jal team with a final score of 48-45 in Kabaddi. The tournaments were successfully coordinated by the student coordinators, Rahul Sharma and Anmol Sharma; the matches were officiated by Mr. Sucha Singh, Mr. Sumit Sharma and Mr. Balbir Singh. Dr. Ashutosh Vasishtha, senior faculty member, SMVDU, graced the finals along with Mr. Rajiv Kumar, Incharge Sports, Mr. Surender Singh, CSO, Dr. Kamaldeep, Mr. Mithun Assistant CSO, SMVDU. The winners were also facilitated by the guests who not only congratulated them for their laudable performances but also encouraged them to sharpen their skills and talents for the future endeavours.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. The Board of Cultural Activities along with NSS at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organized a series of Street Plays on the topic “Evils in the Society”. The jury members for the session were Mr. Gaurav Jamwal (Cultural Instructor, SMVDU) and Mr. Sumeet Sharma (Drama Instructor, University of Jammu). Each of these plays were enthralling for the audience, and everyone applauded the participants for their performance. The plays represented various problems faced by women, such as how their spouse treat them as if they are maids, how girls are molested by their own family members, how raped victims are cross-questioned and humiliated in front of all and how they are portrayed by media, the evil behaviour of men towards women after marriage, how men stalk women when they reject men, how men take revenge by harming them, like acid attacks, etc. The event was coordinated by Ms. Shreya Pandita (Student Coordinator, Theatre, SMVDU) and Mr. Manglam Mishra (Student Coordinator, Resurgence 19, SMVDU).

SMVDU, Katra, April 2019. To generate environmental awareness amongst Shri Mata Vasihno Devi University (SMVDU) Fraternity, the World Earth Day was celebrated at the university where Shri O.P. Sharma, Additional Principal, Chief Conservator Forest and Director, Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, and also popularly known as Vidyarthi, delivered an invited talk on the importance of bird species as indicators of climate change. The theme of this year for Earth Day was 'Protect Our Species' which highlighted and encouraged the symbiotic bond between animals and humans. Previously in 2018, the theme was 'End Plastic Pollution’, and the university actively encouraged students and faculty members to do the needful things in this direction to protect green culture. The participation of students of SMVDU was appreciated and a vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Preeti Sharma, Senior Faculty, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU. Considering climate change and its impact on human life, SMVD University has been organizing events related to environmental issues and tending to foresee a technology for sustainable development.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. A three-day workshop-cum-training of using a 3D Printer for prototype development successfully concluded at the Tinkering Lab at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. This training session was specifically organized for the staff and students of SMVDU, interested in entrepreneurial activities and the development of prototypes of their respective products. The session commenced with an address by Dr. Swarkar Sharma, CEO SMVDU, TBIC, who interacted with the staff and students about the importance of entrepreneurship and how to approach for it, with prototype being an integral part of the final product development. Dr. Balbir Singh, Faculty Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU, and Dr. Rakesh Jha, Dean, Research & Development, SMVDU, were also present and shared their opinion on how technology integration in local areas can change the life of common people. Later, the session was initiated with concepts of 3D printing, its working, method of developing different prototypes and how it is a revolutionary product which will enable users to seamlessly build the products they have envisioned. Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, lauded the efforts of TBIC and suggested the team to conduct a series of workshops on regular basis. Additionally, he suggested to have plans to expose young minds of other institutes to such technologies by inviting them to SMVDU.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. The Annual Cultural Fest, Resurgence 2019, concluded at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. The festival-cum-megaevent festival was organized from 19-21 April 2019 where more than 2,000 students participated. Apart from the cultural events, many informal events, fine arts competitions, literary, theatre, dance, music and fun events enhanced the aroma of the festival. The preparations began with the beginning of this year and the countdown began a month ago. More than thirty events were organized from debates, youth parliament, mea culpa, group dance, skit, and mime to sangam, hip-hop war, bolly-mania, etc. Students from various houses (Aakash, Agni, Jal, Prithvi and Vayu) participated in it with immense enthusiasm and displayed their multi-faceted talent. Vayu house took an unassailable lead by the penultimate day and eventually became the overall champion. Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma (President, BCA) and Dr. Rakesh Kumar (Vice President, BCA) thanked all participants and coordinators for their passion and hard work and expressed their gratitude to all judges who came from different places. The discipline was ably maintained by office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare. Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay (Acting Vice Chancellor, SMVDU) and Prof V.K. Bhat (Registrar) congratulated all participants and the team Resurgence for its successful completion.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. Students of B.Tech, 1st year, Mechanical Engineering from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, visited Chenab Textile Mills, Kathua. The visit was orgainsed by Mr. BK Bhatia, Training & Placement Officer, SMVDU, for giving field exposure in the latest technology to the students. Chenab Textile Mills is a unit of Birla Group of Industries, and it is the largest single automatic mill set up in Asia producing cotton yarn, textile yarn, dyed yarn, polyester yarn and acrylic yarn, and alike. A team of four faculty members: Dr. Balbir Singh, Er. Varun Dutta, Mr. Kewal Krishen and Mr. Chandan, accompanied students for assisting field learning. Dr. R.K. Mishra, HoD, School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU is highly concerned about imparting maximum field exposures to students to update knowledge and prepare students for industry.

Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay flagged off SMVDU Open Marathon organized by Board for Sports Activities. Around 200 atheletes participated in the event including students, faculty, staff and their family members. In students men category Prasad Birajdar secured 1st position, Balbir Singh and Arun sharma secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In women students category Ms.Mansi Sharma student of M.Sc. Physics 2nd year secured 1st position, Ms.Kanika Singh and Vernika gupta secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In faculty/staff Men’s category, Mr. Arjun Singh secured 1st position and Mr. Sanjeev Wadawan and Mr. Amandeep secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively . In faculty /staff women's category Mrs. Archita Dhiman secured 1st position. Mrs. Shalini Pandit and Mrs. Kamini Mishra grabbed 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. Faculty members including Dr. Ashutosh Vashist, Mr. Mir Irfan Ul Haq, Dr. Amit Kant Pandit, Dr. Sanjay Mishra, Mr. Sudesh Kumar were present during the ceremony. SMVD University participated in the All India University (AIU) Kick boxing Championship organized by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam which was scheduled from 8th-11th March, 2019. SMVDU men and women team participated in the event bagged two bronze medals. It was a knock out tournament. Mr. Sandeep won the Bronze medal in below 84 Kg weight category. Similarly in below 60 Kg weight category for women Ms. Pooja won bronze medal for the University. Total five students including 3 boys and 2 girls participated from the University. Coach Balbir Singh accompanied the team for the said event. The coaching for kick boxing was provided by Mr. Sucha Singh, Sports Coach and Mr. Sumit Sharma.

Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, congratulated the winners for their performance and hoped for these kinds of achievements in future also. Prof. V.K. SMVDU Katra, April 2019. School of Architecture & Landscape Design (SoALD), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organized one day workshop to enhance industry interactions and exposure for B. Arch. Students. Around sixty B. Arch. Students of SMVD University and 18 B. Arch. Students of MAM Architecture College, Jammu participated in the sessions along with the faculty members of SoALD. Prof. Rajeev Garg, Head, School of Architecture & Landscape Design, SMVDU, took the opening session. Also, he extended a welcome address to the participants and delivered talks on Human Values & Ethics. Further, he deliberated on the significance of values in our life and motivated budding professionals to inculcate all good values and exhibit an ethical conduct at all steps in life. Ar. Yatin Padya, an eminent architect, gave a talk on various socio-cultural aspects of architecture and urged the students to develop sensitivity towards these aspects. He emphasized on designing the built environment which is contextual, respond to local climate and which imbibes cultural factors. In post lunch session, Chief Commercial Development Manager, Pidilite Industries, Mr Navneet Sharma, delivered informative yet engaging presentation for the architecture students. The presentation covered several aspects of waterproofing requirements in building during construction as well as in maintenance and application of various Dr Fixit products in buildings. Mr. Mishra also presented company profile with showcasing of building products and the projects executed at various locations. The workshop concluded with a healthy interaction among students, faculty members and the speakers. This event was organized as a part of constant endeavor of SMVD University for Academia-Industry interaction for effective and enhanced learning of students. Principal, MAM Architecture College, Ar Harbinder Pal Singh, and other faculty members of SoALD, including Ar. Anoop K Sharma, Ar. Satyanshu Kumar, Ar. Vinod Kumar were also present in the session.

SMVDU Katra, April 2019. The NSS at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, distributed clothes, shoes, toys, household items, etc. to the construction workers and their families who are staying nearby campus. The students volunteers for NSS formed a group to initiate clothes and other items collection from the campus in March 2019. The students from Engineering, Architecture and Economics participated enthusiastically for this social cause. Both faculty and staff members donated generously for this noble concern.

Some people also donated their children’s toys, books, tricycles, etc. After this, it was sorted and the ones which cannot be used were discarded. These were then repacked and distributed to the construction workers and their children residing in nearby areas of the University. The event was coordinated by Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma (Faculty Coordinator, NSS, SMVDU) and Ms. Shubhangi Suri (Student Volunteer, NSS,SMVDU). The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Sanjeev Jain, has congratulated the team for this stupendous effort and pledged for more such endeavors in future.
