SMVDU Katra, November 2019. The School of Philosophy & Culture of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University celebrated the World Philosophy Day on 22nd Nov. 2019. On this occasion, a panel discussion on the theme “How Does Philosophy Matter?” was organized. The discussion was chaired by Prof. (Dr.) D. Mukhopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Faculty of Management. The panelists included Dr. Anil Kumar Tewari, Head, School of Philosophy & Culture; Dr. Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages and Literature; Dr. Balbir Singh, Assoc. Prof., School of Mechanical Engineering; Dr. Madhu Mangal Chaturvedi and Mr. Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Asst. Profs. of Philosophy. The celebration began with a welcome address by Dr. Tewari who also initiated the discussion by emphasizing the role of philosophy in inculcating the values of tolerance and respect. Classical Indian Philosophy promotes these values by respecting the opponent’s position in its structure of argumentation, he said. Dr. Dwivedi pointed out the relevance of philosophy which enables us to raise relevant questions. Dr. Chaturvedi remarked that philosophical analysis is necessary for conceptual clarity of the socially relevant problems. Dr. Balbir Singh mentioned 4-Ps necessary for any organization to be successful; the first ‘P’ philosophy is foundational to the other Ps, namely, Process, People and Problem-solving. Mr. Sumanta highlighted that philosophy demonstrates the limit of our knowledge and suggests that no knowledge is universal. In his presidential address, Prof. Mukhopadhyay said that philosophical approach is essential for the growth of any discipline. The discussion was attended by the faculty members, students and staff members of different schools and sections. The World Philosophy Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to be celebrated every 3rd Thursday of November which is speculative birth anniversary of the Greek philosopher Socrates. The 2019 celebration aims to highlight the importance of philosophy in different regional contexts. The goal is to obtain regional contributions to global debates on contemporary challenges that support social transformations.

SMVDU Katra, November 2019. The School of Architecture and Landscape Design (SoALD), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), organised collaborative events at SMVDU Campus in collaboration with the School of Architecture, Jammu (SoAJ) on National Education Day. In the sequence of events, two-day joint studio was organized for 2nd year B.Arch. Students of both the Schools of Architecture. Further, special lectures were held for 3rd Year B.Arch. students of SoAJ on day two.

The program began with the formal welcome of students & faculty members from SoAJ at SMVDU campus by Head, SoALD, Prof. (Dr) Rajeev Garg. This was followed by a formal interaction between students of both the schools. The faculty members of the Schools then accompanied the students for a short campus visit to understand the context of the assigned joint-studio exercise. Students participated in the joint studio exercise which was a group based and time bound exercise where students from both the schools performed the task in collaboration. The exercise aimed at highlighting the importance of team-work and collaborative learning in architectural teaching learning process. The joint studio was coordinated by Ar. Anil Wali, Visiting Faculty, SMVDU; Ar. Anoop Sharma and Ar. Satyanshu Kumar, and other faculty members from SMVDU; and Ar. Anil Tikoo, faculty member, SoAJ. Students expressed satisfaction and enthusiasm for collaborative learning and advised the coordinating faculty members for more of such innovative learning experiences in near future. On day two, Prof. Rajeev Garg, delivered special lectures on varied topics of interest for 3rd year B.Arch. students from SoAJ. The topics included Architectural Design and Building Construction and involved students in a healthy interaction for better learning. The students also took a round of the campus and school of Architecture building premises and appreciated the experience and knowledge gained. Ar. Harbinder Pal Singh, In-charge SoAJ, coordinated the visit of third year students. Prof. Rajeev Garg, Ar. Harbinder Pal Singh, faculty members and students expressed happiness over this initiative and expressed the interest for more of such collaborative endeavours in future.

SMVDU Katra, November 2019. A cultural evening was organized by the Board of Cultural Activities (BCA), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, where Mr.Kaustabh.M.Kunj, a reputed child prodigy, created beautiful and scrupulous environment with his magical voice. Everyone in the auditorium was mesmerized with his beautiful and attractive voice. Mr. Kaustabh started the program with classical singing. He inaugurated the ceremony with Raag-bihag and also dedicated the song to his guru Pandit Anand Vaid, playback singer Pt. Suresh Wadekar and Bhajan Samrat Padamshree Anup Jalota Ji. His Song Guru Bin Kaon Lagaye Baat was dedicated to his guru’s and everyone in the auditorium was amused by his performance. Two more classical songs Laga Chunri Mein Daag and Naina More Taras Gaye were sung by him and it clearly showed his knowledge about minute details of classical singing. He also sang melody based on Raag Yaman and everyone appreciated him for his beautiful voice and melodies singing. He ended the show with songs of Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Arjit Singh. The cultural evening was graced by the presence of honourable Vice Chancellor PadamShree R.K.Sinha as Chief Guest, Sh. Rakesh Kumar (Power Grid Corporation of India) as guest of honour and Sh. Annand Pal Singh DGM, J&K Bank also graced the occasion as the guest of honor. The musical night was organized on sidelines of International Conference on Applied Biology (ICAB-2019), which was attended by more than 300 delegates from around the world, particularly USA, Europe and Australia. A three-day Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp, sponsored by the DST-NIMAT Project, was inaugurated at the Entrepreneurship Development Cell, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU). Dr. Suparn K.Sharma, Chief Coordinator, Entrepreneurship Development Cell, SMVD University, informed about the prominence of such entrepreneurship programs in educational institutions. To apprise the students of the importance of technology in job creation, Prof. Eswaramoorthy Muthusamy, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, urged to harness solar technology in food processing in Jammu & Kashmir. Dr. R.K. Mishra, Head, School of Mechanical Engineering, motivated the students for entrepreneurship by deliberating the pros of starting own business. The students were guided for values and qualities of good entrepreneurs by Dr. Yugal Khajuria, Dean of Students Welfare, SMVDU. During the function Dr. Saurabh, Head, School of Business, defined entrepreneurship as a way of life by being socially viable, economically feasible and environmentally sustainable. The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of SMVD University, Padam Shri Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha and the Chief Guest of the Inaugural function emphasized on the change of mindset of the students for responsible entrepreneurial activities for the development of the nation. He emphasized on imbibing entrepreneurial skills of the youth for the sustainable growth and development of the nation. With the active participation of around 100 engineering and science students, this EAC will have sessions by entrepreneurs and subject experts on the ways of starting own business. The Camp would consist of sessions, including entrepreneurship, general concepts; historical background-Indian values vis-a-vis entrepreneurship and the present scenario; support and financial assistance from Govt. agencies, banks, financial institutions, SFCs, SIDBI and others-securities demanded by FIs/Banks, etc.; a mechanism for product selection and technology-assistance from R&D labs and others on choice of technology, etc.; financial aspects of MSME unit including salient features of a project report; tech. & commercial aspects of an MSME unit; how to start an MSME unit; identification of opportunities for entrepreneurs & startups in the region; lecture by practicing entrepreneur's success stories. The School of Physics (SoP), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organized an invited lecture by Prof. Sanjay Puri, Professor, School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on “Kinematics of Phase Transitions”. Prof. Puri mainly focused on the examples of pattern formation in the kinetics of phase transitions. He addressed and introduced the audience in various states of matter, phase diagrams, phase transitions, phases of matter, dynamics of ordering and phase separations and many other ar-eas of the contemporary research in an interactive session. The students and faculty members of the university attended the lecture as reported by the organizer and coordinator, Dr. Vivek K. Singh. At the onset, Dr. Kamni Pathania, Faculty, School of Physics, welcomed the Prof. Puri, and Prof. A.K. SMVDU Katra, November 2019. The School of Architecture and Landscape Design (SoALD), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organized a special session under Industry Institute Interactions for the B. Arch. Students. An expert talk by Mr. Vimal Mahajan, Assistant General Manager, Business Development of Kone Elevators, India, was organized for the learning and industry exposure of the B. Arch. students.

The presentation started with a formal welcome of the team members by the Head, SoALD, Prof (Dr.) Rajeev Garg. The industry expert made an interactive presentation, covering several aspects of planning and application of vertical circulation in buildings, including describing advancements in machines. Students and faculty members enthusiastically participated in the session. Various planning aspects of lifts and escalators were discussed along with an example of largest passenger of 200+ capacity installed by Kone. Also, the role of artificial intelligence in lift traffic planning was deliberated upon during the session. The presentation generated a fruitful discussion. Prof. Garg presented a vote of thanks.

SMVDU Katra, November 2019. Dr. Sanjay Mohan, Faculty, School of Mechanical Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, had participated in a three week workshop on Laser Applications and Manufacturing, organized by the Ministry of China in Wenzhou, China, from 13 to 31 October 2019. Only 20 participants from developing nations were invited for this workshop, and Dr. Mohan represented SMVDU and India. During the workshop, the participants visited various industries and had meetings with the industry and academia officials. The participants also visited the Young Scientist World Summit where officials and academia personnels from more than 100 countries had participated. Noble laureates from different fields also delivered lectures and interacted with the audience. Dr. Mohan elaborated on various facilities and ongoing research in SMVDU. During the summit, various deliberations were held, and an MOU was signed between SMVDU and Yalong Intelligent Equipments Group Co. Ltd. and with Institute of Laser and Optoelectronics Intelligent Manufacturing, Wenzhou, China. The MOU partners assured to carry collaborative research works in the future. Dr. Mohan has also expressed his gratitude to Dr. R.K.Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU for allowing him to attend the workshop and to represent India and the university.

SMVDU Katra, November 2019. A two day North Zone Vice Chancellors Meet (16th -17th November 2019), organised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, was concluded today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, J&K, where more than sixty Vice Chancellors and Directors of various institutions, including the Officers of NAAC, AICTE, and other government bodies were engaged in a serious discussion on employability, education and entrepreneurship. During the Valedictory Session, Prof. RK Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He expressed his gratitude to Dr. (Mrs.) Pankaj Mittal for providing SMVDU an opportunity to organise the North Zone Vice Chancellors Meet. During his welcome speech, he raised some significant existential issues and challenges of higher education institutions, addressing what and how education is helping out to get clean air, water and sustainable development. He also emphasised that alternate systems are perhaps required, and we need to give importance to our natural resources. SMVDU Katra, November 2019. The North Zone Vice Chancellor’s Meet was inaugurated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), where Shri Girish Chandra Murmu, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory (UT), was the Chief Guest.

On the occasion, the LG congratulated Prof. RK Sinha, the host & Vice-Chancellor, SMVD University, and Dr. (Mrs.) Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), for organizing the meet on an important theme, titled ‘Developing Employability and Entrepreneurship as Cornerstones in Higher Education’ which reflects the commitment of AIU & SMVDU to create a dialogue amongst its various stakeholders of higher education.

16112019 news2While addressing the audience, the LG praised the SMVD University for ably balancing itself between the safety of girls and quality education, while following the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s motto ‘Beti Bachchao-Beti Padhao’ beautifully. Since India has the highest number of young population in the world, he emphasized that the higher education institutions must exploit and create opportunities for the young. While making a comparison with China and its education system which provides specializations in many traits and branches, he said that higher education institutions must introspect whether there is something lacking in their curriculum, and to find out what is it? Is it related to the innovative aspects that would enable graduates to acquire the competencies required by employers or the skills required to be self-employed?

The LG said that though economic growth of India is slow but it is the fastest growing economy in the world, and hope that this Meet will create a dialogue which will be helpful not only for increasing employability, but also for achieving Shri Narendra Modi ji’s dream to become a $5 trillion economy by 2024. He said that training students for a career at the higher education institutions is not enough but rather students need to be prepared to work in the dynamic global environment. This includes developing among students the skills and important attributes as demanded by the labor market. These skills are important as they enable graduates to meet the demands of the new knowledge economy, which is characterized by flexible workers.

Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, presented a report highlighting past achievements and future action plans. He gave details of the placements and publications brought out by the university, research projects sanctioned to the faculty and the various workshops and conferences that have organized in the recent past. He said that the university is poised to be a center of excellence with the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi ji, which is apparent from the improvement in the ranking from 94th in 2018 to 85th rank among the Engineering and Management institutions in 2019 the MHRD NIRF Ranking.

Sixty Vice-Chancellors and Directors of various institutions were present at the Meet, including Shri Talat Parvez Rohella, Secretary, Higher Education, Jammu & Kashmir; Prof. Ranbir Singh, VC, National Law University (NLU, New Delhi; Dr. (Mrs.) Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Registrar, SMVDU to name a few. Shri Rohella stated that how girls' education is prioritized in Jammu and Kashmir, and informed about the other completed and ongoing projects related to the growth and development of employability and entrepreneurship; Dr. Mittal briefed the LG about the vision and new developments of AIU. SMVDU Katra, November 2019. International Conference on Applied Biology (ICAB-2019) & 1st Annual Convention of Society of Biologists was inaugurated today at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, being organized by the School of Biotechnology, a leading and research oriented school of the university. The Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, who holds an independent charge for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and of Prime Minister’s Office. During his inaugural speech, he said that coming to SMVD University it is a rejuvenating experience for him as he has been witnessing the progress and growth of the university from a nascent stage, and has a passionate attachment for it. Further, he emphasized that SMVDU must establish a niche in new research areas, such as Himalayan research; Atomic and Space technology so that the university may be associated with the Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, GoI, to which he is also a Minister of State. Also, he mentioned that exclusivity and quality research is the key mantra for the survival of new universities. He stated that the university should sign MoUs with other regional and reputed centers of research so that the research works of the university will progress leaps and bounds. The Minister of State also narrated many anecdotes from his personal and professional life, highlighting how research can be selective and discreet, and that there is no excuse for growth. At the onset, Prof. RK Sinha welcomed the Minister, and Prof. VK Bhat, Registrar, SMVDU, welcomed Prof. Manoj K Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, for gracing the event. The School of Languages & Literature (SoLL) organized a lecture by Prof. Varun Arya, Director & Founder, Aravali Institute of Management, Jodhpur, at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, on challenges and dilemmas of effective leadership. The lecture was attended by the students and faculty members of the university. At the onset, Dr. Saurabh, Head, School of Management, welcomed Prof. Arya with a bouquet, and Dr. Amitabh V. Dwivedi, Head, SoLL, presented a shawl as a token of gratitude. During his lecture, Prof. Arya discussed how effective leadership is pragmatically achievable, but he also warned of the possible traps and hindrances in achieving it. The entire lecture was lively and interactive where Prof. Varun Arya used many anecdotes from his personal life in order to explain how someone can be self-confident and motivated, while walking along the ethical path. The School of Energy Management at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, in collaboration with TEQIP III, organized a one-week Faculty Development Program (FDP) on ‘Energy Simulation’ from 04th-08th November 2019, which was inaugurated on Campus. Dr. Ishan Purohit, Energy specialists from International Finance Corporation, was the Chief Guest of the event, whereas Er. Sudhakar Sundaray, chaired the inaugural session while gracing the occasion as the Guest of honor. Dr. Vineet V. Tyagi, HoD, School of Energy Management, introduced the theme of the FDP, while emphasizing the importance of energy simulating softwares in the field of energy industry. Prof. Eswaramoorthy Muthusamy asked the participants to take the full benefit of this program. Dr. Amitabh Vikram Dwivedi, Head, School of Languages & Lit-erature, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, chaired a session during three day international conference held at Govt. Degree College Udhampur from October 31-November 2, 2019. The theme of the international conference was ‘Global Challenges, Innovation and Sus-tainability of Mankind’, while the focus was on unravelling the mind’s eye, organised in collabo-ration with Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). Many quality papers were presented by the faculty members, research scholars and students on topics of humanities and social scienc-es. The highlight of the conference was the invited talks and virtual presentations by the subject experts across the globe. Dr. Dwivedi provided useful inputs and feedback to the participants, and he gave them suggestions for improving their presentation skills. The Principal and Patron of the conference, Prof. (Dr.) Nutan Kumar Resutra, thanked Dr. Dwivedi for chairing the ses-sion, and presented him a memento and a certificate of appreciation. SMVDU Katra, November 2019. The 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was celebrated in the auspicious premises of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. The event was organized by the Sikh Sangat of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and SMVD Narayana Hospital, Katra. The event started with paath of Sukhmani Sahib followed by Kirtan and Gurbani Vichar and, Guru ka Langer was served. Everyone paid obeisance to the Guru Sahib and got the blessings of Guru Sahib. The Sikh Sangat whole heartedly honoured Prof. R.K Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU and Mr. Dutta Dattatreya, Facility Director, SMVDNH in the function. The teaching from the life history of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the basic tenets of Sikhism namely Naam Japna, Kirat Karana and Vand chakna were reiterated in the event.
