A contingent from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, including students & staff, took part in SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) held at Pancheri on 29th November, 2021 and a two day trekking camp organized by Patnitop Development Authority, Kud, on 29th & 30th November, 2021.The trekking team comprising of 26 students (13 girls and 13 boys) and three staff members participated in the Pancheri-Sankari-Ladadhar-Sanasar-Patnitop trek after attending the SVEEP program. Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation program, better known as SVEEP, is the flagship program of the Election Commission of India for voter education, spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy in India.The trekking expedition for students was a result of motivation from Vice Chancellor Padma Shri Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha who motivated the students to take part in such extracurricular activities. The participation of students in the trekking camp was an initiative from Registrar, SMVDU Sh. Nagendra Singh Jamwal, JKAS, who also attended the SVEEP program and accompanied the students in trekking expedition.

The Dean, Student Welfare, Dr. Hari Govind Mishra, also encouraged students for participation in such events. The trekking expedition for students was a part of the ongoing Fit India Movement being undertaken at the university. The sports wing of the university led by Mr. Parvez Singh Slathia, In-charge sports & nodal officer, Fit India supported by sports coaches Mr. Sumit Sharma and Mr. Balbir Singh made other necessary arrangements required for participation in the trekking camp.

One Day online webinar on “Numerical Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow For Industrial Applications" was organized at SMVD University through a virtual platform.The webinar was organized by the School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU, Katra, and was coordinated by Dr. Sanjay Sharma & Er. Varun Dutta, Faculty school of Mechanical Engineering. The webinar received a good response from the faculty, scholar & industry personnel from India & abroad. More than 30% of participants are registered from countries like USA, Singapore, UAE, Malta (Europe), and Bangladesh, including participation from industries like ABB, Chemi Tech, Simfoni, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, and others.

Prof. Eswaramoorthy Muthusamy, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, and Head, School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU, Katra, spoke on the importance of this webinar and encouraged the participants to get benefited from it.Distinguished speakers discussed the numerical heat transfer and fluid flow procedures for the solution on a computer describing heat transfer and fluid flow problems for industrial applications and also have a fundamental understanding of Finite Difference, Finite Volume and Finite Element techniques. A vote of thanks was delivered by Er. Varun Dutta, Faculty, School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU, Katra.

In view of celebrating 75 years of India’s Independence, ‘Bharat Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav’, and on the eve of World Kindness Day, School of Business, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, organized a webinar on "Respect and Dignity at Workplace" on 13th November 2021. Deliberating on the importance of respect and dignity at the workplace, eminent resource person, Prof. (Dr.) Usha Lenka, HoD, Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee, emphasized becoming empathetic and considerate to each other.

During the webinar, Mr. Ronak Sedani, GM of Virgo Group of Hotels, Bhavnagar, Gujarat, shared his practical experiences of witnessing incidents of empowering people through respect and dignity which he emphasized as to be the cornerstone of trust and relationship at the workplace. Ms. Vineeta Koul Lalotra, Director, Pragmatic Career Solutions, Pune, Maharashtra talked about ‘Incivility at Workplace’ and various ways of handling it. She underlined the importance of ‘Respect and Dignity as an antidote of incivility.

Dr. Anil K. Tewari, the convener of ‘Bharat Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav’, also laid emphasis on having compassion for each other. Dr. Saurabh, HoD, School of Business, called upon all the students to exercise respect for each other and be kinder to one and all. In the end, Dr. Arti Maini and Dr. Rashi Taggar, the webinar coordinators, gave a formal vote of thanks and asked everyone to celebrate ‘World Kindness Day’ by taking a pledge to be kind to each other, to self and to the world at large.

The School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) celebrated the day on November 19, 2021 to mark the 552nd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, a philosopher, preacher, noble soul and the founder of Sikhism. In this context, a webinar was organized by School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC), Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat (EBSB) at SMVD University in collaboration with Regional Centre, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) New Delhi.

The speakers of this webinar were Dr. Gurcharan Singh, Shri Gurdeep Singh, Shri Navtej Singh, Shri Inayat Gul and Shri Param Jeet Singh. Shri Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Head, Philosophy and Culture and Faculty Coordinator, EBSB gave an introduction about the World Philosophy Day and contribution of great seers and saints. Dr. Virendra Bangroo, Regional Director of IGNCA, moderated the session.

Dr. Bangroo in his concluding remarks said that Guru Nanak found the essence of life following the three main principles of Naam japo, Kirat karo and Vand chakko. Naam japo means remembering God through meditation, Kirat karo is earning an honest living and Vand chakko is selflessly serving others and sharing resources.Shri Sumanta S. The School of Business, Faculty of Management, SMVD University conducted a national level training program, entitled ‘Stress, Health and Lifestyle Management’ with the financial support from Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India in which the IFS officers from different parts of the country participated.

During the inaugural function, the Chief Guest, Padma Shri Prof. Ravindra K. Sinha, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, said that too much expectations lead to increased stress which disrupts mental health and lifestyle. He stated that stress is the fact of life which sometimes comes automatically and sometimes individuals take themselves. Dr. Jyoti Sharma, Program Coordinator, highlighted the potential dangers of stress-silent killer and its ripple effects on health and everyday functioning of individuals.

Dr. Saurabh, Head, School of Business, SMVDU, while extending formal welcome to all the officers and introduced the university to all the officers. Dr. Suparn Kr. Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Management highlighted the series of training programs organised with the funding of Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, GoI in retrospective manner. Prof. Ashok Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, congratulated the School for organising such kind of training programs. Prof. V.K. Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences appreciated the efforts of School of Business in organisation of this kind of outcome based program.

The interaction with eminent personalities including Sh. Ramesh Kumar, CEO, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Dr. M. Kumar, Regional Wildlife Warden, Jammu were also organised. Besides a panel discussion on improvement in the working of forest departments needed for career development through training and improvement of skills was also organised which was moderated by Dr. Ratna Chandra, Associate Professor, School of Biotechnology, SMVDU. The training program’s pedagogy consists of lecture method, case discussion and analysis, role plays, virtual tours etc. Virtual tours of Wild Life Protection, Jammu, Maharashtra Baomboo Research Centre, J&K, Chirpine Handicrafts, J&K were also really appreciated by the participant officers.

KATRA, November 22: A Two Day National Conference (Online) on ‘Cultural Studies and Interdisciplinary Humanities: Convergences, Interventions and Possibilities’ has been inaugurated at SMVD University on 22nd November, 2021. The National Conference is being organised by School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU. The welcome address was given by Dr. Isha Malhotra, Head, School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU and Convener of the conference. She emphasised on how literature departments need to constantly engage with the crisis of the times through competing notions of textuality, materiality, subjectivity and identity forging through and beyond non/in/trans/meta/post paradigms. Prof. V.K Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in the conference address emphasized that in the times of crisis, humanities need to respond with greater urgency as it can no longer sustain as the custodians of traditional canon alone. The Guest of Honour, Sh. Nagendra Singh Jamwal (KAS), Registrar, SMVDU, addressed the participants and enumerated upon the significance of events like conferences and workshops and congratulated the School of Languages and Literature for organizing such events. Padma Shri Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU addressed the participants, highlighting the importance of cultural studies in contemporary times. The keynote address was given by Prof. Akshaya Kumar, Department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh and the plenary talk was delivered by Prof. Bijoy Boruah, Professor of Philosophy, IIT Jammu. The session concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Anurag Kumar, Coordinator of the conference.

The Vigilance Awareness Week was observed from 26.10.2021 to 01.11.2021 throughout the country, themed, "Independent India@75: Self Reliance with Integrity" also commemorating the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.The NSS, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, conducted different activities to celebrate vigilance awareness week. The Run for Unity was organized for students, faculty and staff members in collaboration with the Board for Sports Activities. The run was flagged off by the Vice Chancellor, Padma Shree, Prof. R.K. Sinha.

A session on vigilance awareness was also conducted for students. The various activities conducted during the session including screening of videos related to corruption in daily life, slogan writing, sharing of views on corruption by students and faculty members, etc. To spread awareness about complaints under PIDPI (Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers) posters were displayed at various offices of the university. Online “Integrity Pledge” was also taken by university employees during the week available at CVC’s website. Offline Integrity pledge ceremony was also conducted for class four employees of the university.

21112021 TedThe change enabler and TEDx speaker Lieutenant Sandhya Suri inspired the students of SMVD University in her session on ‘Breakthrough Thinking for Self-Development'. Being among the few women officers who served on board warships almost two decades ago she contributed in paving the way for women officers to be granted permanent commission in the Navy.

With more than 17 years of experience in sales, marketing, branding, logistics, administration, operations and HR in Nigeria and India she is breaking barriers for men and women alike as an inspirational icon.As the voice for women and millennial youth Lt. Sandhya Suri shared her experiences as the consultant, motivational speaker, author and poet. She inspired the students to dare something worthy while being comfortable in own skin to rise and shine and not letting the prejudices in the society be the barrier in what one wants to do and achieve.

Lt. Sandhya Suri is the recipient of Woman of Worth award 2019, Inspiring Women of the Year 2020 award, 40 over 40 award, the most Admired Inspiring Indian award and the winner of Digital Global Public Speaking Championship.

Run for Unity was held at SMVD University for celebrating National Unity Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Nearly 300 students, faculty and staff members participated in the event. The run was flagged off by Vice chancellor of the university, Padma Shri Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha, who also addressed the gathering apprising them about the importance of this day. He informed the participants about the role of Sardar Patel in unifying the Indian union.

The run was conducted encompassing the university campus in the morning hours. The participants also took the unity oath at the run.The event was organized by the Sports department of university under the leadership of Mr. Parvez Singh Slathia, Incharge Sports wing and Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Coordinator, National Service Scheme (NSS). The sports coaches Mr. Balbir Singh and Mr. Sumit Sharma were also part of the organizing team.

National webinar on ‘Shakt Traditions & feminism’ was organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, J&K and Regional Centre, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).The speakers were Shri Shiv Kumar Padha, Bashol, J&K; Dr. Peeyoosh Bala, Jammu ; Dr. Baldev, Jammu ; Dr. Debashree Palit, West Bengal; Dr. R. K.Gupta, Kathua ,J&K; Shri Ram Sevak, Kishtwar J&K,; Dr. Pankaj Sharma , Udhampur, J&K,; Dr. Renu Sharma, Haryana and Ms. Meha Gupta, St. Louis University USA.

Shri Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Head, Philosophy and Culture, SMVDU, gave an introduction about the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative to celebrate the Unity in Diversity of India and further strengthen the fabric of traditionally existing emotional bonds between the people of our nation. He reiterated that our ancient traditions connect our country and exploring and mapping the Shakh traditions is the joint endeavor of SMVDU and IGNCA. Dr. Virendra Bangroo, Regional Director, moderated the session.

A one-day online workshop on “NEP 2020: The Educational Outcomes of 21st Century Schools” was organized by Faculty Development Centre at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, (SMVDU) on 30th October 2021 for schoolteachers and academic coordinators in which more than hundred and fifty participants from various schools of Jammu and Kashmir and other states of the country participated and got benefitted.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Chief Guest and VC, SMVDU, Padma Shree Prof R.K Sinha. In his address, he underlined the fundamental value of school education.Dr. Ratna Chandra, Member FDC and Coordinator of the workshop welcomed the dignitaries, special invitee guests and the participants. She highlighted the importance of organizing such workshops. Dr.Suparn K. Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Management and Chairperson, FDC focussed on the changing dynamics of the education system in modern times and stressed upon the skilful training of the students.

The special invitee guests of the event were: Dr. Deep Khare, Principal, Jodhamal Public School Jammu; Madam Rohini Aima, Principal, Jammu Sanskriti School; Madam Renu Khurdi, Principal, J&K Police Public School, Jammu and Madam Manikarnika Sharma, Headmistress, Delhi Public School, Katra.

While explaining NEP 2020, the speakers focussed on the fact that it is not the policy that brings change, rather it is the classroom education that does so. They highlighted the vision of NEP 2020 which attempts to provide equitable knowledge regarding culture, inclusion and developing skills. Prof. Renu Nanda, Head, Department of Education, University of Jammu talked on the topic ‘Explaining NEP 2020 to School Teachers’. She discussed that the schools need to be ultidisciplinary institutes, teaching and practising core moral values. Ms. Sapna Makan, Delhi State Teacher Awardee from Bal Bharti Public School, Rohini Delhi, talked about ‘the Golden Triangle in NEP 2020: Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment’ in which she highlighted the sustainable development goals of NEP 2020, seeking to ensure inclusive and equitable vibrant knowledge society. Prof. Nandita Shukla Singh, Department of Education, Panjab University spoke on the topic ‘NEP 2020: Empowering the School Teachers’.The workshop was concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Sonika Gupta, Co-coordinator of the workshop. The workshop proceedings were moderated by Ms. Sakshi Singh, Faculty from the School of Languages and Literature, SMVDU and managed by Mr. Himmat Raj Sharma and Dr. Vishnu Gupta members of the organising committee.

SMVDU-Vikalp, a students’ initiative of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), has been conducting events and celebrations on national days of importance to support the growth of the marginalized students. This time, in this vein, Vikalp celebrated the 12th children’s day on Sunday 14th November 2021.

The Chief Guest, Prof. R.K. Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, SMVDU, delivered his speech to the young children of the nearby villages. He wished for their wellness, and talked about the growth of all by supporting the marginalized section and maintaining equality to all sections of the society. "We are going towards 100 years of independence; we need to work harder to excel in all the fields. Vikalp is the only initiative I have ever heard of in contribution to the nation in any university”, he said.

Various cultural performances were held, including group dance, poetry recitation, duet dance, painting competitions, etc, followed up by the prize distribution. The evening ended with a vote of thanks by Shri Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, Faculty Coordinator, Vikalp. He appreciated the visible efforts of the volunteers of 2nd and 3rd year.The volunteers thanked everyone for supporting them with donations, and committed to organize events and celebrations in near future.
